Several hundred volunteers hope to recruit in the Metropolitan Region the Belgian company Janssen, the pharmaceutical division of the American multinational Johnson & Johnson, which together with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile will apply the trial of a vaccine against covid-19.

The process of recruiting people is already under development, they indicated. Dr. Miguel O’Ryan, infectologist from the University of Chile, indicated that -to the eaves of his research group- the study will be based on four health centers: two Family Health centers in Colina, another in San Bernardo and a fourth at the Exequiel González Cortés Hospital in San Miguel.

Participants must be people over 18 years of age, who will be part of the project for two years. After receiving all the information regarding their relationship and signing the respective consent, they may receive a random vaccine or placebo; that is, neither the volunteer nor the health team will know who receives the new product or the harmless substance.

During the period described, the research team will be in permanent contact with the participant to monitor their health status, especially if they develop covid-19; In addition, blood samples will be taken to see the effect of vaccination on the immune response of the participants.

The Janssen vaccine works using a viral vector platform. “Their strategy is based on using adenovirus 26, a virus that can infect people without causing disease and that has been genetically modified so that it does not replicate,” explained Dr. O’Ryan.

“This non-replicating virus has been introduced, as if it were a Trojan horse, a genetic segment of Sars-CoV-2 (causing covid-19), specifically the gene that codes for its most important protein, the so-called Spike –Spike, in English- so that it carries this segment and thus, upon entering the organism, our cells can translate this gene and produce this Spike protein so that it is presented to the immune system “, added the researcher. The purpose of monitoring for two years is to see the possible duration of immunity and study what happens to volunteers who will naturally be exposed to the virus.
