The Legal Medical Service (SML) acknowledged this Friday that it had mistakenly delivered a body to the wrong family in Santiago.

As reported in a statement, in an internal control carried out at the SML’s Avenida La Paz headquarters, “An exceptional error was detected in the delivery of a deceased person” happened last Thursday, December 3.

According to the agency, the error led to the presentation of the corresponding complaint to the Public Ministry and the initiation of an internal summary investigation, to determine the corresponding civil servant responsibilities.

The SML “met with the family to explain the delivery error, and began the process of exhumation of the body “, they detailed.

They also pointed out that “the protocols for the delivery of the deceased establish strict procedures that are constantly evaluated by the Service, which in this case were not respected.”

“Although the person who removed the body recognized it as a relative, this does not exempt the SML from liability, since its procedures are based on the scientific identification of the deceased,” they added.

Thus, they declared that “the Legal Medical Service deeply regrets this human error, which undoubtedly deepens the pain of the loss of a loved one, and reaffirms its greater commitment of all its officials in the institutional work, and the dignified treatment with those who, for different reasons, must go to the Legal Medical Service ”.
