The CEO of Tesla, the billionaire Elon musk, assured that together with his family they do not plan to receive a vaccine against COVID-19.
In conversation with Kara Swisher, in an episode of The New York Times podcast “Sway”, Musk assured that his conviction is that neither he nor his children are at risk of contracting the coronavirus and, therefore, have no plans to access to vaccines when available. “No, I am not at risk of contracting COVID. Not my children, “he said.
The statement that his family is not susceptible is not related to evidence to support it, since everything occurs in a scenario in which Musk has minimized the severity of COVID-19 and has questioned the quarantine measures that caused the closure of ss Tesla factories. “In the grand scheme of things, we have something with a very low mortality rate and a high contagion,” he repeated on the podcast.
In the past, Musk has also said that he probably caught the coronavirus in January of this year and went so far as to claim that children are “essentially immune,” even though that claim has been completely discredited.
But in a scenario in which COVID-19 has generated a global crisis, and has already caused the death of almost a million people, it is necessary to emphasize that the purpose of a vaccine is to generate acquired immunity against a disease, stimulating the production of antibodies. The effectiveness of vaccines is scientifically proven and their implementation since the 19th century has eradicated diseases such as smallpox.
With regard to COVID-19, if truly effective vaccines can be developed, it will be necessary for the population to be vaccinated, since only in this way will it be possible to create a degree of immunity in the general community that allows resuming the massive activities that in here and now are just a mere memory.
