El Urbano Rural – Emotional well-being in times of quarantine

[ad_1]

This pandemic that has reached our country has us permanently concerned, either by the increase in cases or by the isolation measures that have had to be taken during this last period. Maintaining a quarantine, whether voluntary or permanent, has affected the well-being of many people. Learning to know yourself, tolerate negative emotions, and accept what happens is necessary to achieve this emotional well-being.

Fear and anxiety are manifested in different ways in people and also according to age. In the case of children and adolescents, some will express their concerns directly, but others will have difficulty sleeping, headaches or stomach pain, anger or change in appetite. As you can express and communicate your concerns in a warm and trustworthy environment, you can feel relieved. In older people, loneliness, fear, hopelessness or anger are more common, being more intense for those who live alone. Traditionally, older people are informed by means such as radio and television, in the case of the latter it can seriously accentuate their anguish due to how permanent they are exposed to the subject.

How do we take care of ourselves?

– Find information from reliable and official sources
– Use social networks, phone and other means to keep in touch with family and friends.
– Maintain a routine in your diet, hours of sleep, movement and exercise. Drawing, reading, listening to music and don’t lose your humor are activities that will help you face this situation.
– Avoid self-medication.
– In the case of children, do not demand them with the fulfillment of school tasks, but do keep limited hours that alternate with other activities. If possible, follow up and support online activities. Regulate feeding guidelines, we are a country with a large number of overweight children and it is a priority to carry out a control in this period of confinement.
– In our teenagers there is the opportunity to learn some crafts, whatever is preferred for them. Together organize the distribution of household chores. Promoting the use of technology to maintain communication with other family members or with friends, the use of tutorials, videos, a tik-tok challenge, can even be great learning and why not pick up a musical instrument.
– Take care of diet and moderate alcohol consumption, since it does not clean, disinfect, or protect against Coronavirus.
– Teleworking has been a new challenge, here it is necessary to agree on protected disconnection times, in order to have this free space to enjoy the other areas of our life at home. Another factor that can also help is to previously define the physical place where you will work inside your home; Let others know that this space will be your “office.”

Self-care, mutual support, and considering any of these recommendations will help level your emotions in this time of quarantine. If you identify that at some point it becomes unsustainable for either you or someone in the family, feel free to seek support immediately. We are not used to talking about emotions, but today it is a necessity to take care of ourselves and to be able to take care of ourselves. If you are very sad, with permanent negative thoughts and feelings that are already affecting your usual activities; that’s the time to ask for help.
