On September 18 will be the fifth anniversary of the death of the famous sports commentator Eduardo Bonvallet, who took his own life in the middle of a deep depression.

A couple of weeks before the anniversary, the journalist Mary Victoria Laymuns, his widow, spoke with the daily Las Últimas Noticias, where he said that he had learned to live with grief.

“I have blurry images and memories, not very connected and with many bumps. I remember I answered the phone and a person from the radio station, I don’t know who, but it seems that it was a manager, told me: ‘He killed himself … he killed himself.’ I thought it was a pitanza, a joke in bad taste, but no, he insisted: ‘He killed himself, he killed himself’. I put down the phone and sat down. And I cried. I cried I think two days in a row without stopping. I fell into a state of shock. I don’t even have very clear memories of her funeral ”,. expressed María Victoria.

“Many people have asked me later if I remember what they said about him that day, what they said to me when they greeted me, and I have almost no memories. I was in another. He simply did not accept that Eduardo had committed suicide, “added the woman who at that time had been separated from Bonvallet for about a year after 12 years together.

María Victoria says that they had a civilized relationship for their three children: Aurelie, Eduardo and Noelle. However, she believes that he perhaps had hope that they could return.

“He clearly didn’t like it when I told him I was out with friends. Although he did tell me that he dated other women. He was jealous of me and I feel that it was difficult for him to assume that they would no longer be a couple, ”said María Victoria.

“I feel like there were many things that made him make this decision. Eduardo had psychological problems, suffered from depression and that is why he had to take medication. When we were together, I can attest that he followed the doctor’s instructions and took the remedies. But when we separated, I think he gave up that discipline, the treatment, the pills, and that was the trigger to do something that he would never have thought he would do “Laymuns noted.

Regarding whether Eduardo ever talked to her about suicide, María Victoria said that he told her that “when he was young, in his days as a soccer player, he twice thought about committing suicide. But when we were together, he was always very attached to life. Even when he had cancer, he didn’t think about death as an option. On the contrary, he told me that he did not want to die, that our children needed him and that he did not want to leave us alone ”.

Threats of death

María Victoria said that she received death threats after the death of her partner, as many blamed her for his decision.

“I even received death threats. And I had to swallow comments from people who spoke as if they knew about my relationship with Eduardo and I didn’t even know them. They threw bullets at me from all sides. Some of his radio buddies, for example. I was never friends with them. They weren’t from our mutual friends. She did not understand how they spoke so loosely about something they did not know. There I met human baseness. I made the mistake of answering, of trying to explain ”, he confessed.

On the other hand, Laymuns said that many things were said that were not like that, such as that she did not let him see her children. “That is part of what was said without knowing. In fact, a couple of weeks before his death, Eduardo went with the three children on vacation to Viña. The occasion to which some referred was one in which the children were alone with my mother and Eduardo arrived at my house a little upset. My mom called me scared and I told her to tell her to come back the next day, when I was there and she would have calmed down. He then got angry, went to the Carabineros to report me and put on Twitter that I would not let him see his threads. That’s what those who criticized me took hold of. But it is not true that I wanted him to stop seeing the children. I know he adored them, he was his dad ”, he assured.

On the occasion, María Victoria acknowledged that she misses him. “She will always be part of my life and the father of my children,” she said, adding that despite the fact that it will be five years since her death, she cannot say that everything is over. “Throughout this period I have gone from grief to anger and now to acceptance. It is something I can never forget, but I have learned to live with grief ”., ended.
