An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook the town of Petrinja at local noon, in central Croatia. The earthquake has caused an undetermined number of deaths, including a girl, and wounded, according to informed the local mayor, Darinko Dumbovic, to the radio station Croatia.
The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 12:19 pm, was located 46 kilometers from Zagreb and ten kilometers deep, according to the Croatian news agency Hina.
“Petrinja is in ruins. There are dead and injured, there are missing. There is no house that has not been damaged. Ambulances cannot reach all places. It’s chaos, ”Dumbovic said.
Shortly before making these statements, the mayor of Petrinja had indicated to the portal “24 sata” that “The services have begun to rescue people from the rubble” and that the Army has come to the area to help with the tasks.
Regional television N1 shows images of collapsed roofs on numerous buildings in Petrinja, as well as rescues by firefighters and volunteers.
After the earthquake, two aftershocks followed, both exceeding 4 degrees, according to the source. The earthquake was felt throughout the country and in much of the Balkan region and Central Europe.
On Monday, a 5-degree earthquake struck the same area of Petrinja, causing no casualties or major material damage.
