The National Emergency Office (Onemi) declared Preventive Early Warning in the Metropolitan regionfor the frontal system that from tomorrow will affect the central area of the country.
The meteorologist of Radio Bío Bío and Chile Weather, Gianfranco MarconeHe pointed out that the rains will be intense and in some sectors they will become normal for a winter day.
For example, in the commune of Central Santiago would fall between 20 to 25 millimeters of water; in Pudahuel 10 to 15 millimeters; in Las Condes 35 to 45 millimeters; and in San José de Maipo 35 to 45 millimeters.
The latter is worrying because, according to the forecast of the Chilean Meteorological Directorate, the 0ºC isotherm (point where the rain turns into snow) will be high, from 3,200 to 4,200 meters above sea level. That means it could rain in areas where snow usually falls, resulting in risks of landslides and mudslides.
Rainfall, according to Marcone, will begin on Friday afternoon, but will be dropped with greater force on Saturdayor. On Sunday, meanwhile, there may be instability with the possibility of thunderstorms and hail; and on Monday a few drops could fall.
Call of the Onemi
Faced with the risk of floods, the regional director of Onemi in the capital, Miguel Muñoz, made a call not to go to the foothills and mountain ranges, areas where the inhabitants of the capital tend to visit during the day and also to camp, especially in the Cajon del Maipo, commune of San José de Maipo.
For this reason, Muñoz warned those who are in streams or on the banks of water courses to be returned to their homes “because they may be exposed”, since “these streams could be activated”.
“It seems religious procession the amount of people who are going up to the Cajón del Maipo ”, he criticized.
For her part, the governor of the province of Cordillera, Mireya Chocair, indicated that since this Friday they will start expelling those who stay in risky places from San José de Maipo and insisted on the call not to continue climbing.
In addition, he indicated that from tomorrow they will lower the barrier of the San Gabriel Tenure, they will close the access to the El Yeso reservoir and that, if people insist on going, Route G-25 will be cut.
“We have many people on vacation in the commune, camping on the river bank ”, he pointed out.
On a possible massive water cut and the complications this would bring amid the pandemic, Chocair noted that Andean Waters It has 34 hours of autonomy to deliver the supply in case of emergency.
