The government in Britain prohibited meetings of more than six people in England to try to keep contagion from coronavirus after a strong rebound across the country primarily attributed to young adults attending parties without observing social distancing norms.
Downing Street said urgent action was needed after the daily number of positive cases confirmed by laboratories it reached nearly 3,000 on Sunday. The number dropped to 2,460 on Tuesday.
Authorities said that from Monday, the legal limit of people at a gathering in England will be lowered from 30 to six. The new law is applicable indoors and outdoors, and includes private residences, restaurants, and parks. Violators could face a fine of 100 pounds ($ 130).
Weddings, schools, funerals and organized team sports are exempt and larger gatherings will also be allowed if the family or “support bubble” is larger than six elements.
Government ministers and scientists used various means to exhort the population not to lower their guard.
“We’ve been able to relax a bit over the summer… but these recent numbers really tell us that as much as people want to say ‘oh well, it’s gone,’ this isn’t gone,” said Dr. Jonathan Van-Tam. , deputy chief medical officer of the government.
Despite the increase in infections being “much more marked” among 17-21 year olds, Van-Tam expressed concern about a “more general and progressive geographic trend” across the UK.
“People have relaxed too much”, he pointed. “Now is the time for us to re-engage and realize that this is a persistent threat.”
The UK has the highest death toll by COVID-19 in Europe, with almost 41,600 within 28 days of diagnosis. The actual death toll is believed to be much higher because the government balance does not include those who died without a diagnostic test.
