The deputy of the Socialist Party (PS), Jaime Tohá, responded to the questions of the same opposition, of which he is a member, for abstaining from voting in favor of the constitutional accusation against the former Minister of Health Jaime Mañalich, which was rejected this Tuesday in the Lower House.
“The actions of former Minister Mañalich in the face of the pandemic are full of bad decisions and arrogant attitudes. My opinion is critical and If I abstained in the constitutional accusation, it was not to defend what was done by this administration. On the contrary, I think that the only way to overcome an incompetent government like the one we have is to raise an opposition that is serious and consistent. ”Tohá initially said through a public letter.
“This constitutional accusation did not meet any of those requirements, because all the mistakes made by the government during this health crisis are not attributable to a breach of the Constitution, as required by the requirements of the constitutional prosecution, but to a wrong strategy to deal with covid-19. If it were shown that there was manipulation of the information as the Prosecutor’s Office is analyzing, it would be configured an understandable cause, but that edge is in full investigation and the discussion around the accusation does not provide enough evidence to judge whether such manipulation has occurred. ”, Added the deputy for Concepción.
The former mayor of Bío Bío explained that constitutional accusations are fundamental resources for a democratic system, in the same sense, he specified that their consequences are severe and their use must be made according to the merits of the case and compliance with the causes established by the Constitution, “not simply as an unthinking addition to the decision of other parliamentarians for the fact of sharing the status of opponents,” he said.
Tohá also pointed out that in his vote he chose to calm the spirits, because he acted convinced that this series of constitutional accusations are of “Little legal basis and doubtful political relevance”They don’t contribute, he said.
“On the contrary, it has the opposition locked in an unsuccessful brawl within the political world instead of speaking to that citizenry that must decide these days a constituent process that will mark our lives for the next decades,” said the socialist.
The parliamentarian added that his commitment is to dialogue and understanding as “The best way”.
Ethical conduct
“Almost 18,000 people have died during this health crisis. It would leave us all more relaxed to find a culprit and feel that we have done justice to each of these people and their families. This number of deaths was repeated dozens of times during the discussion of the constitutional accusation, and the more it was repeated, the less calm I felt with the possibility of approving it ”added Tohá.
Finally, he pointed out that “far from doing justice to those families, this accusation seemed like a shortcut that eluded all the things that we should correct and change so that this is not repeated. I understand that other colleagues have another evaluation, I can accept that they weigh the information we have in a different way, but what I do not accept is that this difference becomes the limit of acceptable political behavior. If that is the border of our ethics, don’t count on me ”.
