Don Francisco and his mea culpa for Vamos Chilenos: “It was my mistake to talk about the goal”

Almost 48 hours after the closing of the Vamos Chilenos campaign, the animator Mario Kreutzberger, Don Francisco, makes his analysis of what was the debut of this charitable crusade, driven by the pandemic and which was imposed to go to the aid of older adults. disadvantaged in the country, thanks to an alliance with the Catholic University and its Conecta Mayor foundation.

And in the evaluation two edges are crossed: the solidarity initiative itself, whose goal self-imposed by the organizers could not be achieved – $ 16 billion was reached of the $ 30 billion pesos that were expected in the first instance-; and in direct relation to the above, the reception of the public, which left the program – broadcast on national TV – with a rating lower than that of the last Telethon, also developed in a pandemic.

Don Francisco speaks with La Tercera about everything that surrounded the solidarity crusade.

How do you evaluate what happened with Vamos Chilenos?

I was very happy and very grateful for the response of the people, the Chileans. There were many symbolic donations, of 500, of 1000 pesos, people who made other contributions before and the situation today, there is so much unemployment … People who wanted to participate and honor their elderly people. And we also had great support from businessmen, that allowed us to finally meet the goal, the most important, which was instead of serving 50 thousand, to do it to 80 thousand (older people), because in reality the cut of the most vulnerable was 80 thousand.

Being the first time of this campaign, what self-criticism do you make?

Well there are many self-criticisms that must be done. In the first place, we did the campaign in 20, 25 days, because it was an emergency campaign, because the people had wanted us to do some national unity. I think we still have to analyze this campaign, it has to give us many lessons, favorable and unfavorable, regarding how we did the campaign, because I found the program itself to be good, very good. It seemed to me that he had everything, this tribute that we paid to Dr. Sebastián Ugarte, to Cecilia, to the teacher Valentín Trujillo, grandmother Tik Tok, many very different things, the minute of silence for the victims of the Covid, many things and very beautiful, and with enough rhythm.

It was also mixed with the National Holidays …

Of course, that may be something that should be studied, if it was the best option to have done it these days because the idea was to accompany the people who were going to be at their homes, or if people regardless of being at home wanted to celebrate . Maybe I’m not so sure there, but regarding the program, it seemed fine to me.

Until the day of the program there was no mention of a goal, but you ended up mentioning it in the broadcast, do you think it was a mistake?

I think it was a mistake of mine because of the emotion, because in addition I was not clear about the figure that was needed either at that time, but in the emotion of the game … One has to admit sometimes that it was a mistake, because not we had a goal and we hadn’t told anyone about the goal. The goal was to be able to serve 80,000 people and we did.

During the program some political mentions were made, what did you think of that?

No, it does not seem to me because we have always been very transversal in all campaigns. The fact, for example, that this is being delivered through all the mayors of Chile, therefore there are all the tendencies of Chile. We have invited all the artists, from one side and the other, so I think that when you go to a part you have to know what is appropriate. I think this was a program of national unity and that I think we shouldn’t touch politics because we didn’t touch it, we never touched it. Many times it has happened that someone uses, because it seems to me that they use something, to say something that has nothing to do with the case. Now, we don’t limit anyone, but it seems to me that people have to do what is right at the time, because it had nothing to do with politics. It is a live program, so everyone takes responsibility for what they do and what they say.

Do you think this campaign set a precedent by thinking about the next Telethon, perhaps reformulating it, especially thinking about the transmission?

Absolutely. In each program that is done, in each event that is done, there is learning. I think that there were many lessons learned here, and this is learning for all of us because it is a world that we did not know, a virtual world. I believe that an extraordinary job was done taking into account the conditions that had to be worked, respecting all the principles and all the sanitary regulations that existed at that time.

Do you think that these television solidarity campaigns continue to function, that they should continue?

I have always thought, I do not know if they are television campaigns, I have thought that the broadcast media and those of us who work in them, apart from doing sports, entertainment, politics, information programs, we have a commitment to the community, And it seems to me that the instance that Chile has to join all the media when there is an earthquake, when there is a flood, when there is an emergency, I think it distinguishes us from many countries, it seems to me a very good instance.

At the end of the transmission he said goodbye, somehow handing over this mission to the animators who accompanied him …

Because I think that’s the way it has to be, and that’s how I hope this decade begins, now with a new generation because you have to understand that I am a person who has been doing this for 42 years, and I’m never going to retire from this, I will always be participating, but surely not from the same position, not in the same way, because otherwise this would not have the continuity it should have.

Is that why it did not appear at the beginning of the transmission and the opening message was delivered by the actor Francisco Reyes?

I must explain that I did nothing about this program, this production was directed by Patricio López, and I did it on purpose because I think that a new generation has to come and make the decisions that this generation corresponds to, and we collaborate with our experience.

“They proposed to me like this and I said ‘it seems very good’, it was the proposal they made, but they decided the whole program, not just that part, all of it. Every time I appeared it is because they decided that I should appear. I did not direct the show. program, I have never directed it, but it had much more impact 10 years ago. This is not the first time that has happened, it has been 3 or 4 years that I have had less and less participation in the construction of the program.

Is there news about the Telethon next year, as a tentative date?

We are all in talks, because now we have to analyze everything that has happened and what things we can learn from this, that is important.
