Ronald Fuentes has been listed as one of the best coaches in Chilean soccer. With his Unión Española he is having a brilliant campaign, which has the Hispanic team fighting point by point with Universidad Católica and Unión La Calera for the National Championship title.
Twelve victories, three draws and only four defeats are, so far, the corollary of a great year for the former central defender, who in this way has resumed his career as a coach, after the traumatic step in charge of the sports management of the University of Chile, where he experienced several conflicts.
The U did not go well. In the final stretch of his mandate, he had practically no voice or vote in the makeup of the campus. He experienced public confrontations with coaches and players such as Mauricio Pinilla and Johnny Herrera. However, his affection for the blue cast remains intact.
That is why in an interview with the newspaper La Tercera he was asked if he thinks about the possibility of directing the lay cadre at some point. However, his answer was surprising and blunt: “No.”
The current trainer deepened his sayings, clarifying that today he is more interested in projecting himself abroad. “I am not working as a coach to direct Universidad de Chile. At this moment I think of being well in Unión Española, of achieving things here. My aspirations are to lead abroad. ”
In addition, he ruled out that his two years as a manager at the U could harm his career as DT, he ruled it out. “They were two important years of my life that will serve me in my career as a coach. Managing budgets, seeing new markets, among other things. That has helped me to make a competitive squad here. It also helped me to have a very good network of contacts that can serve me for the future due to my projection as a technician.
