“Do not show off”: Medical College criticizes deployment for vaccines against Covid-19 and asks Piñera for more “sobriety” in the process

At 6.42 in the morning, the 10,000 vaccines against Covid-19 arrived from the Pfizer-BioNTech laboratories from Belgium. In group 10 of the Chilean Air Force (Fach), a whole security operation was deployed to receive them in conditions, with Carabineros and the Investigative Police (PDI) located in strategic positions and a helicopter to transfer the doses to the National Stadium .

Another media operation was also deployed, which was led by President Sebastián Piñera, who was accompanied by the Ministers of Health, Enrique Paris; of Science, Andrés Couve; of Foreign Relations, Andrés Allamand; and Interior, Rodrigo Delgado. His participation was not limited to observing the situation, but he approached the helicopter that will transport the vaccines and a press point, where he expressed “great joy, great emotion to see that helicopter that carries hope,” for which he called citizens to be vaccinated with confidence.

This staging, which some described as a “show”, was criticized because although the arrival of the vaccines is an important fact, only 10,000 doses arrived, and since each person has to be inoculated 2 times, it translates that only 5 thousand people will be vaccinated, so the shipment could have been received in a more sober way.

For the socialist senator Juan Pablo Letelier, this is a “clown government; pure media show due to the arrival of barely 10,000 doses of covid19 vaccines. The ‘2 boxes’ are equivalent to 0.06% coverage of the target population.” “With ‘Piñera’ all seriousness has been lost,” he closed.

Izkia’s apprehensions

Meanwhile, the president of the Medical College, Izkia Siches, who in an interview with Radio Universe He said this was a “great staging”. “We have asked that this process be somewhat sober and convey to the public that we are starting from a very incipient stage, there are 10,000 doses to reach 5,000 people and the goals are much more important than those,” he said.

“For no reason these vaccines can mean a relaxation on the part of the citizenry, but unfortunately we are going to have one or two increases in important cases in January or in the fall and that without a doubt is counterproductive,” he added.

Siches added that as a Medical College they hope that “I hope that the Government will channel the communication strategy to something that I hope is taken with the seriousness that is required and also not to show off this process.”

A similar opinion is shared by the founder of Mori, Marta Lagos: “The President of the Republic has made about 3 public appearances with speeches announcing the arrival of the vaccine in Chile. It is a vaccine that reaches 10,000 people and still does not arrive. Today when it arrives there will be another public appearance by the president. “

But the arrival of the first shipment of vaccines is not the only activity in the Government’s folder, because at 11 am the President of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera, accompanied by the Minister of Health, Enrique Paris, will attend the start of the vaccination process in the Metropolitan Hospital.
