The director of Internal Revenue Service (SII), Fernando Barraza, was summoned urgently to the session of the Finance Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.
The reason? explain why the Penta Group received a tax benefit equivalent to $ 1.4 billion, money that the holding company spent on its lawyers to defend itself for the legal problems it faced.
By telematic means, the director of the SII responded to the questions and indicated that “It is important to mention this situation … to clarify that here there is no privileged situation, here there is no exception, here there is no extraordinary situation of any kind, beyond what is strictly established by the regulations”.
Excusing himself of not being able to provide more information, he referred to pointing out that “I could only say very briefly is that in this case, as in all those that are subject to inspection, we have only done what the law establishes” .
For Barraza, the worst of all this situation It is not the benefit that Penta received, but rather the leak of the background to the press.
“Perhaps, the unusual thing is that this is a case that leaks and I think there is a point that is important for us to obviously evaluate, it is not right that the tax records of the taxpayer audits, which are protected by tax secrecy, leak ”, he remarked.
For that reason, the director of the Service announced the initiation of an internal administrative summary, in order to discover those responsible for which the information has come to light.
Due to the tax records that are secret before the law, the director excused himself from not being able to provide the details of this particular case.
“We have no difficulty or impediment to give all the explanations that are necessary, with the only exception that to refer to a particular case, we need to enforce the tax secrecy,” he also indicated.
Along these lines, he asked the commission to hold “a secret or reserved session” in order to expand.
That argument was supported by the deputy of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) and member of the Finance Commission, Patricio melero, who was in favor of holding a secret session to analyze the case.
