Diego Latorre returns from time to time to experience what happened in the semifinal of the 1991 Copa Libertadores, when he visited Colo Colo with the Boca Juniors jersey and ended up eliminated in a day full of incidents at the Monumental stadium.
It is that there are things that the Argentine does not finish understanding of the gale of violence: “It is a forgettable match, beyond that Colo Colo was able to play and win in good standing, because he had a great team,” he assumes.
It was the main topic of the conversation that the sports commentator had with Manuel de Tezanos on his YouTube channel, of which we highlight the story full of details of number 10 of that team, directed by Oscar Washington Tabárez.
“The bilateral relations between Argentina and Chile were not going through their best moment, due to political circumstances. Today is another era, after so many years, of the arrival of Salas and so many Chileans. But at that time there was a tension impossible to ignore”, recognize.
After the 1-0 first leg at La Bombonera, everything was defined in Chile: “When we arrived at the airport we found a warlike climate, Beagle Channel flags, things related to politics that had nothing to do with the party, trying to decimate our spirits”.
The weather did not improve. “We arrived at the hotel and not to mention, we had to change hotels, they threw everything at us, things that were normal in those days of Copas Libertadores. Perhaps in a return match in Argentina the same thing happened,” acknowledges Latorre.
Then in the stadium everything began to overflow: “There were too many people on the playing field. Later we learned that they were fans characterized as journalists and photographers, who were constantly shaking the weather. And to the people, who were furious“
But the disbanded goals came. “When the goal is Colo Colo (Rubén Martínez) there is a total invasion. That game today was not played. The security conditions were not given, it was overwhelmed by the number of people, the whole environment was prefabricated, of course” , he asserts.
The pitched battle was missing. “In the second goal, when we go to look for the ball on goal, they throw it in the pit and it disappears, they push it it seems to me (Antonio) Apud when he tries to rescue it and there is a total batahola.”
“And well what everyone knows was put together, everyone fighting against everyone. With the unconsciousness and irrationality that later the game continued. I score and the third goal unleashed the madness, we were detained and the police confronted us, we were defenseless there“he accuses.
Thus was given the image that remained for history. “To get out, they kept our passport. There were photographers who were fans, with their cameras hitting ours,” recalls Latorre, who scored a discount that night that did not work, but had special dedication.
“The plane was a release, it was an unbearable climate, you have to see what we lived through those hours, the climate of violence, the people’s chants, the agitation that was on the field,” the talented trans-Andean midfielder finished reflecting.
