On the same day that it will be discussed in the Senate Chamber, the draft constitutional reform presented by deputies for a second withdrawal of 10 percent of the pension funds suffered a severe blow after Parliamentarians from Chile Vamos gave their support to the initiative promoted by the Executive.
The project requires 26 votes for its approval, that is, the support of six pro-government senators in the absence of Alejandro Navarro, who was operated on a few days ago and is licensed.
Although so far five parliamentarians from Chile Vamos had given their support to the project, the senator Ivan Moreira (UDI) decided to align itself with the government’s position, stating that “in view of the fact that there are two identical projects I am going to vote in favor of the Government’s project and I am going to abstain from the reform. I am abstaining in the reform exclusively out of respect for all those parliamentarians from Chile Vamos who voted in favor in the Chamber of Deputies. “
Senators David Sandoval (UDI), José Durana (UDI) and Juan Castro (Ind) also added to Moreira’s words and confirmed that they will abstain from voting, while Manuel José Ossandón (RN) indicated that he was evaluating making a similar decision.
“The five wayward senators are going to abstain, because this constitutional reform has no viability of coming to fruition, that the people receive 10 percent. The only way that exists for people to receive 10 percent is the government project, which does not go to the TC “, assured Castro.
Deputy Matias Walker (DC), one of the promoters of the 10 percent withdrawal project, called for the approval of the opposition reform and said he feared a political maneuver by La Moneda: “It may be unfounded, but my concern is that this government tends to veto the Executive bills that come out of Congress in a different way than how the Government wanted those bills from the beginning. “
In case of not achieving a quorum, the initiative must pass to a mixed commission, leaving the way open for the Executive’s proposal.
The project will be discussed at 4:00 p.m. this day in the Senate Chamber, as confirmed by the president of the instance, Senator Adriana Muñoz (PPD).
