The renewal seems to have reached the ranks of the Communist Party (PC) in the central committee election, where for the first time the highest votes fell on militants who do not belong to the politburo but rather those who have broken into the country’s news agenda, grabbing cameras and generating great interest in the media.
It is enough to remember how the deputy Camila Vallejo managed to get green gray hair from the Piñera government with her 40-hour project or how the popular pharmacies of Mayor Daniel Jadue became, as of 2015, a commercial alternative in practically the entire country including communes like Vitacura.
In this way, the positions within the community, both the parliamentary and the communal head of Recoleta, shook the party structure, which was electorally injured, causing concern in the communist family.
Damage control and “fresh air”
It is the first time that a deputy has imposed herself on her president by more than a thousand votes –5,923 versus 4,893 of William Teillier-, who was ranked 70 out of a total of 96 members for the central committee, which will force to apply an urgent damage control in these days, prior to the meeting of that instance, which must elect the table and the political commission of the party. Letting “new air” in could be part of the damage control given the results of the central committee and, when it comes to shaping the leadership, they are considering incorporating a woman into the general secretary. But although the most obvious name is that of Camila Vallejo -because she was the most voted-, the PC logic does not work that way and, thus, the cards that are shuffled are two others: Karol cariola (11th place), with 5,596 votes, and the president of the CUT, Barbara Figueroa, who scored 5,303, ranking 36th.
The option of the union leader does not seem to be plausible, since it would imply that Figueroa neglects an area that is crucial for the PC and that has to do with the strategic relationship with the workers. The name of the deputy Cariola is the one that sounds the most, assure sources of the community, the same ones that remember that she handles the internal structure very well and that she was secretary general of the Communist Youth.
But, in this design, not only the party table is the one that could be “occupied” by the replacement generation, but also the political commission, made up of 10 militants. – Do you recognize that with this election it was stated that within the PC there is a generational struggle that is for the replacement?
-There is no replacement. No. That is a truth out of fairy accounts. The party does not work with bourgeois logic.
-But one of the options being considered is that, on the basis of parity, a woman should enter the post of the general secretary.
-The parity is given in the constitution of the central committee. We believe in the collective intellectual, the unipersonal has much less relevance, since it is the collective that defines. And I assure you, that (steering parity) has not been discussed anywhere.
