Cupertino Andaur, a man convicted of the rape and murder of a 9-year-old boy, Víctor Zamorano Jones, died in prison.
The crime dates back to 1992 in Lo Curro, when the murderer entered the minor’s home while his parents were away, to sexually abuse him and then suffocate him to death.
In the first instance, Zamorano Jones’ brother was pointed out as the main suspect, but clues provided from Copiapó finally allowed Andaur’s arrest in March 1993, then 42 years old.
Thus, the 23rd Crime Court found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment for robbery with homicide and another 20 years for rape.
The punishment, however, was not final, as in May 1996 the Santiago Court of Appeals sentenced him to death, a decision that was later ratified by the Supreme Court.
The case – given the commotion it caused from the beginning – ended up in the hands of then-President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, who announced a pardon for the person who had to face the firing squad on a national television station.
“The death penalty is as inhumane as the crime that motivated it. Only God gives life, only God can take it away, ”Frei said at that time.
Since then, Andaur has been held until his death. In 2017 he had submitted a request for release, however, it was denied.
As reported by the Gendarmería through a statement, the body of the inmate was found inside his cell, at around 8:35 am this morning.
“The causes of his death so far are undetermined and are being investigated,” they detailed.
