Cross-sectional criticism of Teillier for not condemning violence in protests and sayings about primaries | National

The president of the Communist Party (PC), William Teillier, avoided condemning the violence in the demonstrations and described the incidents in Plaza Baquedano as “minor”. Given this, both the ruling party and the opposition came out to criticize him.

“If the government and repressive forces such as the Carabineros consider that the protesters are violent, then if I say that there should be no violence, it means that I say do not go out to demonstrate and I won’t say that, because the right to demonstrate has to progress. What I could say is that they try by all means to do it peacefully, that is, ”he told La Tercera.

The deputy added that “such violence is very rare. Here we want to connote a state of violence that I do not believe exists. So, how can I condemn a thing that was so minor“.

Given this, the Minister of the Interior, Víctor Pérez, pointed out on Twitter that “the PC seems not to understand democracy where the rules of the game are dialogue and agreements, not stones and destruction. Days from plebiscite, those with political and public responsibility would be expected to respect democracy, not to attempt against it by inciting violence ”.

For his part, the government spokesman, Jaime Bellolio, used the same social network to point out that “violence is the opposite way to democracy. Those who do not condemn violence or prevent it from occurring, show their contempt for our institutions and the rule of law. I regret that, days before the plebiscite, the PC promotes a direct attack on our democracy“.

For his part, the deputy for National Renovation, Sebastián Torrealba pointed out that with this the Communist Party shows that believe in violence as a method of political action.

Opposition

But from the opposition there were also criticisms. The president of the Christian Democracy, Fuad Chahín, said that it seems dangerous to him that a politician does not dare to condemn violence. He added that all political leaders must help build democratic paths and called Teillier’s sayings irresponsible.

Meanwhile, the president of the Radical Party, Carlos Maldonado, reacted to other statements by the president of the PC, who referred to the failed opposition pact for the primaries and he said that the former Concertación parties “are in decline and that will be said by the polls.”

Maldonado said that, contrary to what Teillier says, the ballot box will demonstrate the validity of social democratic ideas.

Teillier also slipped in the interview that the PRO would have betrayed them when it comes to negotiating the primaries.

Its president Camilo Lagos said that “Guillermo Teillier omits that the agreement was broad primaries, but we will surely meet again in everything that comes (…) From the PRO we call on the communists and regionalists to join the primaries of the rest of the opposition, such as it had been our agreement of September 25, but they didn’t want“.
