Good start for Cristian Garin (19th in the world) at Roland Garros, third and last Grand Slam of this reduced season. The Chilean debuted this Tuesday in the Parisian major with a victory against the experienced German Philipp Kohlschreiber (86 °), 36 years old and former 16 in the world, in four sets.
The first national racket, the 20th seed of the tournament and who had just reached the semifinals of the ATP 500 in Hamburg, beat the German by partials of 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 and 6-4, in two hours and 54 minutes, to advance to the second round and match what was done in the 2019 edition.
The match started fairly even, with the two players maintaining their service, until in the tenth game the Creole managed to break the serve to unbalance the marker and take advantage.
In the second episode, the Arica-born entered deconcentrated and delivered his shipment in the first game. That break was enough for the Teuton to later keep the sleeve and match the actions.
However, it was only an oversight, because in the third chapter “Gago” came back with everything and got two breaks, in the second and fourth, to be 5-0 and ended up taking the set 6-1.
In the fourth set the Creole had a great recovery, because he delivered his serve in the sixth game to be 4-2 down. However, he went bankrupt twice and won 4 consecutive games to sentence everything in almost 3 hours.
With this victory, Garin advanced to the second round, where he will face Australian lucky loser Marc Polmans, who surprised by beating Frenchman Ugo Humbert, and the Chilean will try to settle for the first time in his career in the third phase of a Grand Slam, something that a National has not done since Wimbledon 2011 with Fernando González.
