At least thirty hit men participated in the attack in which the former governor of the Mexican state of Jalisco, Aristóteles Sandoval, was assassinated on Friday in the city of Puerto Vallarta.
Sandoval was shot in the back by two subjects when he was going to the bathroom while having dinner at a restaurant.
One of his 15 bodyguards, who is currently in serious condition, was also injured in the attack.
The hit men arrived shortly after 1:00 am in at least four vehicles, surrounded the restaurant and two of them entered the premises and fired at the PRI politician.
Later they fled with the rest of the group without major inconvenience. Sandoval was transferred to the Puerta de Hierro Hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
The state prosecutor, Gerardo Octavio Solís Gómez, has lamented that the restaurant staff has eliminated much of the evidence when cleaning the premises – “they literally got rid of all the evidence” – and has called on citizens to contact the authorities if they have any information that could help in the investigations, reports the newspaper ‘El Universal’.
President promises to investigate the crime
“We would particularly like to report that when the judicial staff arrived, the restaurant staff had already lifted all the signs inside, they had practically cleaned up the crime scene. This will make investigations a bit difficult, since the entire scene has literally been moved, “said Solís, according to the newspaper ‘La Jornada’
“It is something improper (to clean the scene of a crime), a circumstance that should never happen at any time, however, it must be made public and in terms of the fact that there was a shooting outside the restaurant, we would also like to ask for the support of the citizenship in order that if there was someone who took a video, a screenshot, something that could help us, since the restaurant staff literally got rid of all the signs that were “in the bar, he pointed out.
The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also conveyed his condolences to the victim’s family and promised in his daily press conference that “it is a matter that will be investigated so that the cause, motive and those responsible are punished “, according to ‘Milenio’.
