The confirmed outbreak of covid-19 that originated in the O’Higgins Base in Chilean Antarctica caused the positivity of PCR tests to skyrocket in the Magallanes region.
The information was delivered this Tuesday by the seremi de Salud (s) of Magallanes, Eduardo Castillo, who referred to the infections that originated in Army units.
“We have a cumulative positivity of 10% in the last 7 days, and a daily positivity that was recorded at 16%. This increase was influenced for the PCR tests that were taken to those who came from the O’Higgins base“, Stressed the authority.
At the national level, this Tuesday the positivity of the Polymerase chain reaction, which detects the coronavirus in people, reached 5.68%, this being the highest figure since last October 21, when it reached 6.11%.
On the contagions at the Antarctic base, the chief of Antarctic Affairs of the V Army Division, Colonel Patricio OchoaHe explained that of the 36 infected, “26 correspond to Army personnel and 10 are civilians from a contractor company that was carrying out scheduled maintenance work at the Antarctic base.”
Likewise, the officer of the military institution indicated that all those infected are isolated and complying with their quarantine in the city of Punta Arenas.
The outbreak also forced the entire crew of the Ship Sergeant Aldea of the Navy began a preventive quarantine off the coast of Talcahuano, after having visited Antarctica in recent weeks.
In the last report the Ministry of Health (Minsal) reported 105 new cases in the southernmost region of the country, which places Punta Arenas as the commune with the most active cases (378) nationwide.
