Conmebol confirmed this Friday that it will make a profound change to the game system of the Copa Sudamericana, although it assured that “it does not involve alterations in the usual competition calendar or an overload for the clubs.

The Council of the Conmebol approved changes in the format for the 2021 edition of the South American Cup, which will have as a great novelty the inclusion of a group stage.

The confederation stated that “modifications were approved in the tournament format aimed at ensuring that each of the countries is better represented in the different phases of the competition.”

Conmebol detailed that “the new format does not imply alterations in the usual competition calendar or an overload for clubs and associations and will be played with the same number of teams as at present ”.

In this new version, a phase 1 will be added, played in the countries, with round-trip matches between their participating clubs, to qualify for the group stage.

This aims to ensure the presence of at least two teams from each country in the group phase of the competition. To these The 12 teams from Argentina and Brazil will be added directly classified and four more clubs from phase 3 of the Copa Libertadores.

The teams that qualify for the round of 16 will be joined by the teams that have finished third in each group of the Copa Libertadores.

Finally, Conmebol specified that “a total of 56 teams will take part in the tournament which will include 157 matches, with the only final scheduled for November 6 ”.
