Consuelo Holzapfel (66) has more than 40 years of experience and is one of the most recognized actresses in Chie, however, and like many compatriots, her retirement is far from what she expected.
So at least he confessed in an interview with the Reyes del Drama podcast, hosted by journalists Jorge Sepúlveda and Victor Schwencke. “I don’t even dare to say it because I don’t want them to cry,” said Consuelo, who acknowledged that “I receive 178 thousand pesos.”
“It is strong, it is the reality of this country. One understands why things that happen happen. In all the families of Chile there is a case like this ”, he assured.
During the conversation, the interpreter revealed that she never had a work contract in the more than 20 years that she worked for TVN. “I was always on a fee, they owe me all those impositions for my retirement that they no longer gave me. I never dared to sue TVN, I no longer did. I was afraid to get into something like that, I’m very hippie, I don’t want problems, “he said.
His retirement was deeply affected by this as he had to tax independently, leaving gaps in his savings. “If you said something you could have lost your job, you had that fear of losing your grip. I would appreciate having a job, but I was not so far-sighted, I did not fight that fight, “he acknowledged.
“The situation for artists during the pandemic is tremendous. It’s terrible to say it, but I don’t have much hope for the future. I don’t think the pandemic will make us better people, I think we will be the same and worse again. I don’t know what has to happen to the human being so that he becomes aware, “he said.
Consuelo, who was part of hits such as Romané, La Fiera, El Circo de la Montini and Iorana, recalled how her beginnings in acting were, which date back to the mid-70s in Valdivia.
With the sparkling personality that characterizes her, she arrives in Santiago and goes to knock on the doors of Protab, a defunct production company where soap operas were recorded. There ask for Malú Gatica With whom he had previously shared in theater and managed to get his first role in a soap opera called “El Secreto de Isabel”, which lasted only one episode on the air since it was censored for having political conflicts with the country’s dictatorial regime.
“Censorship was daily bread at that time”, he assured, remembering that in addition at that time they were prohibited from even mentioning certain words such as “disappear” on television, so that nothing is associated with the disappeared detainees.
Holzapfel recalled one of his most challenging roles in the television series “El Milagro de Vivir” (1990) where he played two sisters Clarisa and Elsa, who were identical but ten years apart. “What most entertained me doing that television series was doing these double scenes with both characters. You had to maintain the emotionality of the dialogue. It was quite an exercise in acting. I had a great time even though it wasn’t a great soap opera, it had a very strange script. Imagine that they gave me Pancho Reyes as a son who is two years older than me “he said between laughs.
“(Sabatini) was very angry”
On the classic “golden age of TVN soap operas” led by Vicente Sabatini, the actress highlighted the hard teamwork that was carried out, which allowed to reap the successes that are remembered to this day.
“One living it did not know that it would transcend so much. They became a kind of soap opera icons. I get a lot of messages from people who are watching so many soap operas from that time. It was a very beautiful time and I was so lucky to have been there, “he said.
Consuelo worked with Sabatini until 2002 where she had a brief appearance in “El Circo de las Montini”, then she switched to the cast of the second semester where she directed it. Maria Eugenia Rencoret.
“Both are quite similar in being very clear about what they want to do, but Quena had much better character than Sabatini, because he was very angry, he got confused when things did not work out or he was not satisfied with how the scene was turning out. It was altered “revealed.
When asked if the director challenged some actors more than others, Holzapfel confided that he “gave it by time” and she was one of the most affected. “He challenged me a lot. I tried to be as orderly as possible, to always be on time, but he always managed to find a mistake that I had made, he always managed to find something because it caught my attention ”, he recalled.
He also added that he had a very strong obsession with schedules and demanded a resounding punctuality from the cast. “I still think there is affection, I have a lot of affection and respect for him,” he added.
Holzapfel stressed that, on the other hand, Claudia Di Girólamo, the director’s partner, never received a wake-up call. “He never challenged Claudia because there was no reason to do so. She arrived 10 minutes before everything. I was always ahead. Very applied, stoic. I take my hat off for her, ”he argued.
On the other hand, Holzapfel said that Vicente Sabatini gave him many freedoms in the construction of his characters: “With the Gladys de The fair It allowed me to work on my look, the chasquilla, eating gum all day. I begged him to let me do certain things that he found to be a lot. It is still good that they slow you down because I get a bit delighted. In Green gold, for example, they took texts away from me because I added a lot of fillers, it entertained me a lot ”.
The artist also acknowledged that she would have loved to have been a gypsy in Romané, but in the end it did not happen. “I did not propose it to Vicente, I never dared to propose anything to him because it is most likely that if he did, he would end up giving me a completely different role to fight me,” he said.
The drastic end of “The Golden Years”
During 2015, Consuelo played Beatriz Lira in the successful sitcom “Los años Dorados” broadcast on TV + (ex UCV TV). This series was recorded in the Valparaíso region, which made Consuelo very happy, who received every week the cast composed of Carmen Barros, Gloria Munchemeyer and Anita Reeves.
Everything was perfect until it had a drastic ending. “They gave us several awards, they praised us a lot, but no one ever understood why we did not continue. There were so many chapters written that we never did. Weird things that happen on TV. There is a lot of speculation, but nobody has the truth as to why we don’t record more ”, he explained.
On the other hand, he says that to this day there are intentions to continue the sitcom. “We recently met the four actresses for Zoom, they are all intentions”, revealed.
Regarding his departure from the soap operas, Holzapfel comments that it was due to the fact that one day he decided to make a resounding change in his life and moved to live in Con Con, Valparaíso region, for which he began to accept only smaller roles that did not required so much time in the capital.
“TV forces you to maintain a look, so when I left, I decided not to dye anymore, to be more hippie”, he comments. “I did this change to improve my quality of life, so I wanted to stop and just started to walk away. Also, here I was given the opportunity to build teams and do a lot of theater, “he concluded.
