Complex judicial situation passes the bill: Ossandón declines his presidential aspiration and seals alliance to support Mario Desbordes

A meeting that was held under the most absolute secrecy, in an office in Vitacura, was held by Senator Manuel José Ossandón and former Defense Minister Mario Desbordes, both from Renovación Nacional (RN).

According to what was detailed by the newspaper La Segunda, at the meeting, both agreed on the concept of the social right, in which both are working to be a real alternative to what they call “the right of the Instituto Libertad y Desarrollo” that, they consider, “he has governed without counterweight” in his sector.

In that sense, sources who knew of the meeting pointed out to the aforementioned media that “now is the time to give a strong boost” to that concept of the social right. And for this, Ossandón made the decision not to be a candidate for the Presidency, to join forces and support Mario Desbordes.

In the environment of the former minister they see this alliance with good eyes, considering that Ossandón is one of the parliamentarians who obtained the most votes in the last election and, in addition, has very good networks within RN and in its constituency, the Metropolitana Oriente.

However, the complex judicial situation facing the former mayor of Puente Alto makes a possible new presidential adventure for Ossandón uphill. The senator was formalized in August in a case for eventual influence peddling in favor of his son’s aggregates company in Pirque, and also adds another deformed investigation for alleged bonuses to an adviser, issues that the parliamentarian has described as a “vendetta ” politics.

The new alliance

The alliance between Ossandón and Desbordes has its eye on January 23, when the general council of the party is held, in which the presidential candidate who will compete in the primary elections of Chile Vamos will be appointed next July.

The truth is that, when there are still some details to be refined, this alliance had competition, since Senator Ossandón himself met previously with Sebastián Sichel. Although the reason for that meeting is unknown, it is believed that it aimed to seek support for the presidential race.

And last Sunday, the Minister of Foreign Relations, Andrés Allamand, called Ossandón to find out if he would be willing to support Sichel. Allamand’s contact did not have an answer, since close to the senator they comment that Ossandón feels distant from Sichel because he does not represent the social right, but rather is linked to the business world.
