In the hot January this 2020, when the coronavirus was still a distant reality and rooted in China, Claudio Orrego Larraín (1966) -today winner of the constituent unit primaries for the government of the RM- suffered an accident while doing one of the things he likes to do the most. It was on the Andrés Bello highway, in the middle of the concrete jungle.

“It was a Thursday. I was going to Radio Cooperativa on the Andrés Bello highway. There was a group of cyclists in front of me. I wanted to go ahead, I rang the bell, but one of the subjects did not hear me. It opened and I hit myself a mother and my lord ribbing. I was bleeding and I was scraped, “Orrego later told the half LUN. Product of the blow, the Christian Democrat militant It resulted in five broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder.

With the pandemic already installed in the country, Orrego had time to recover and get back on the bike, with which he usually does a lot of activity outdoor, hiking on two wheels. So much so, that to launch his campaign as a pre-candidate for the governorship of Santiago he did it precisely by pedaling, with a circuit worthy of Richard Tormen and which denotes that he is a regular cyclist: from Plaza San Enrique, in Lo Barnechea, to Plaza de Maipú.

It is not the first time that the name of Claudio Orrego has been linked to a public position. Previously, it was Councilor for Peñalolén between 1996 and 2000. Then he occupied the Ministries of Housing and National Assets during the government of former President Ricardo Lagos.

Born in Santiago, Claudio Orrego is son of a prominent DC militant, historian Claudio Orrego Vicuña, who was also a parliamentarian and a close advisor to President Eduardo Frei Montalva. Within the multiple currents of the phalanx, it is located in the so-called “Princes”, which groups together, among others, names such as Alberto Undurraga, Ignacio Walker or Sergio Espejo, and which represents a more conservative wing within the party.

He studied law at the Pontifical Catholic University. In his years as a student at the traditional house of studies, he participated in the Sebastián Acevedo Movement against Torture, a group whose goal was to defend human rights during the military regime. In addition, he was president of the FEUC, in 1990.

This is the second time that Claudio Orrego appears in a primary election. The previous one was in 2013, when he was the standard-bearer for DC in the presidential primaries of the Nueva Mayoría, where he competed against José Antonio Gómez, Andrés Velasco and Bachelet.
