China announced on Thursday that has approved “with conditions” the marketing of a first vaccine against coronavirus.
This first vaccine, produced by Sinopharm with the Institute of Biological Products of Beijing, it has an efficiency of 79%, the pharmaceutical group had indicated on Wednesday.
With these results, the “National Administration of Medical Products approved on December 30 (…) the application for registration of the inactivated vaccine of Sinopharm (…) conditionally,” announced in a press conference a senior official of this body, Chen Shifei.
He specified that the laboratory should continue clinical trials.
The Vaccine Message
The announcement of the launch of this vaccine has at least two objectives, explains Antoine Bondaz, of the Foundation for Strategic Research.
“On the one hand, the vaccine has an efficacy rate higher than 50%, so it can legally be launched on the market.” “But there is also a much more political argument,” he adds, “which is to say that the vaccine is less effective because it was conceived with traditional methods, contrary to that of Pfizer / BioNtech, so the Chinese vaccine is not only safer, but also much easier to administer as regards, for example, respect for the cold chain in developing countries ”.
“Definitely, the Chinese vaccine was conceived for developing countries that do not have the same resources as rich countries. It is to show that China is a benevolent, altruistic country, which from the beginning conceived a vaccine for developing countries. Our vaccine is not for the rich, but a Chinese vaccine for everyone ”: this is the message, according to Antoine Bondaz.
Meanwhile, Chinese Deputy Minister of Health Zeng Yixin reported that the authorization to market it allows the generalization of vaccination of risk groups, such as the elderly and those with other chronic diseases.
“The third stage will be to vaccinate the entire population,” he said.
According to him, a vaccination “of 60% to 70%” of the 1,400 million Chinese citizens will be necessary to guarantee “the protection of the entire population” of the country. The deputy minister promised that the vaccine is “free for all.”
President Xi Jinping promised to make Chinese vaccines a “global public good.” The country has already started delivering doses to countries such as Indonesia or the United Arab Emirates.
