In an online consultation that considered the participation of 16,809 people, the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic probed the perception of corruption that exists in our country, with results that are alarming. The study carried out by the body led by the comptroller Jorge Bermúdez will allow the institution to analyze and adopt measures to deal with this problem.
The sample was developed in 16 regions of the country and in 328 communes. More than 70% of the participants believed that Chile is more corrupt today than last year.
The survey details the five areas in which a greater perception of breaches of integrity is generated.
These subjects are: public procurement (71.8%), hiring of personnel (65.3%), construction of public works (54%), delivery of social benefits (43.8%) and inspection and audit (32, 6%) top the list.
Comptroller’s office and types of corruption
One of the aspects that the study addresses are the types of acts that are perceived as corruption within State agencies.
Thus, for example, obtaining benefits for being a relative of an authority, favoring a friend or relative, accepting money for speeding up a procedure or not reporting irregular acts are part of the concepts identified by the 16,000 participants in the study.
“Have you been a victim and / or witness of an act of corruption?” is another of the questions that the analysis delves into. And the responses, according to the Comptroller’s Office, were revealing: 51.4% of the participants, that is, one in two respondents (8,645 people), said they had seen or known of an act of this nature.
Distrust of institutions
Despite the high number of victims or witnesses to these events, only 32.9% reported them. The reason behind the low number of complaints, the study details, would be explained because 47.4% distrusted the institutions that would see the complaint, while another 39.9% considered that their complaint would have no consequences.
The details of the survey of the Comptroller’s Office will be known in December, where an explanation of the conclusions obtained will be given and the databases with the responses collected will be shared to be analyzed by academics and experts in the field.
After obtaining this first vision on appreciable corruption in public institutions, the Comptroller’s Office considers that the results will be complemented with other forms of citizen participation that will deepen the results obtained in this relevant survey.
