Lucas Alvarez He was 10 years old when he went on vacation with his family to Thailand. It was 2004 and a tsunami devastated the place leaving thousands of deceased and disappeared.
As the water dragged everything in its path, Lucas found his mother, the Spanish doctor, María Belón, and together they struggled to survive.
After some natives found them and transferred them to the hospital, where the woman was treated, he also wanted to help the rest of the victims.
Lucas’s father, Enrique «Quique» Álvarez, and his two brothers Simón (8) and Tomás (5), had also met, but in another sector of the emergency zone. It was the 10-year-old boy who brought them all together.
Thanks to the help of many people, everyone was able to survive and return home. That day, Lucas promised the doctors to dedicate their lives to helping others, just as they did to them.
The history of the Spanish family was taken to the cinema by director Juan Antonio Bayona, in the movie The impossible, starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor.
Meanwhile, Lucas’s role was played by Tom Holland, hor and known for his work on Spiderman.
Sixteen years have passed since that tragic day and today he faces a new battle. The boy became a doctor, like his mother, and currently works in the Intensive Care Unit of a London hospital, where he cares for patients with coronavirus.
“(The tsunami) It was a unique and unfortunate experience at the time. But since then it seemed almost logical to me to have to repay to a certain extent that debt that remained to me, ”he assured in the Spanish newscast Antena 3 Noticias.
From England, the 26-year-old has also raised his voice about the lack of protection supplies that exist in healthcare centers.
“Until now, especially in Intensive Care, we have received decent protective material and other sectors have been less favored, but this past week the need to improvise has begun to be noticed. HA couple of days ago they sent us painter divers and last night we had to use fine plastic in front of them ”, said.
The UK currently has over 133,000 confirmed cases and 18,000 deaths, so Lucas called on people to become aware of the situation and criticized those who continue to stroll the streets.
“It seems to me to be a very unsuitable, arrogant stance, and especially in the face of vulnerable people who for socio-economic reasons do not have that privilege,” he said. “It is worrying that people do not get to see the seriousness of the matter”, added.
“The physiological as well as the psychological consequences are going to be very brutal. We know that we have a lot ahead of us, so we have to continue, “he added.
The rest of his family also went on a mission to help others. His brother Tomás graduated suma cum laude in Science, Technology and International Relations at Georgetown University; and his father was a volunteer for the NGO Proactiva to help Syrian refugees.
