This week a study by the University of Chile was released, through which it was found that cats can get SARS-CoV-2 from their owners. The study analyzed samples of dogs and cats from the Metropolitan Region, whose owners were diagnosed with coronavirus.
The main motivation for conducting this study was closeness of people with pets, added to international evidence that some animals could be susceptible to being infected with the virus – despite not being a common event.
“There is no evidence to indicate that cats have a role in the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic. Yes, these cases should continue to be studied, but it is not a reason to generate an alarm and neglect the welfare of our pets”, Explained Dr. Víctor Neira, academic from the University of Chile and member of the One Health Commission of the Veterinary Medical College (Colmevet), who led the study.
For his part, Dr. Patricio Retamal, academic at the University of Chile and also a member of this One Health Commission, stressed that the disease in people has always been by human transmission.
“All the international evidence existing to date indicates that the infection of people has always been by transmission from other people, and that animals have always been infected from their owners”, Clarified Retamal.
Thus, the study also reported that the animals do not require specific therapy in these cases.
