Carabineros de Chile delivered a balance sheet on Wednesday on the institutional work in the country during the health crisis caused by the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The uniformed police register more than 18 thousand people arrested for not respecting quarantines and about 17,500 people arrested for violating the curfew.

“At the national level we have more than 18 thousand people detained for infraction of sanitary matters, for not respecting these sanitary restrictions and ultimately for putting us all at risk,” explained Colonel Patricio Santos, of the Carabineros Criminal Analysis Department.

Santos made a count of the figures until May 3, affirming that the criminal record is lower, with a downward curve that is explained, among other things, by the State of Constitutional Exception of Catastrophe that has been in force since March 19 throughout the national territory, with a nocturnal curfew throughout the country and communal quarantines that generate less circulation of people.

The uniformed officer clarified that the crime continues to occur but is adapted to the current contingency.

Along these lines, it reported a decrease in robberies nationwide of 1% compared to the previous year. The decrease in the Metropolitan Region is 12%, and translates into 22 thousand fewer cases.

The officer also explained that in this period of the year there are 3% more robberies with violence than the previous year, but robbery instead of inhabited decreased 22.6%, which means that there were 3,918 fewer crimes.

For his part, General Enrique Monras, chief of the western zone, said that police personnel from the Metropolitan Region carried out 29,500 vehicles and identity checks related to sanitary measures, only on Tuesday, with the result of 90 people. detained for not respecting the curfew 263, for not respecting quarantine and 186 people detained for common crimes, 44 robbery, 31 by court order, 23 for reception and 17 for theft, among other crimes.

In the last month, the institution carried out 439,000 controls, both vehicular and identity. 5,216 people have been arrested for various crimes, 1,199 by court order, 763 for theft, 476 theft, 355 for receiving stolen vehicles.

Monras added that there is also an increase in crimes of domestic violence, registering 296 people arrested.

“We can say that the crime curve has been decreasing since the pandemic entered and these curfew or sanitary quarantine measures have been adopted. But of course what one can observe on a day-to-day basis is that crimes of robbery with violence there is a feeling of a small increase, “said Monras.
