The Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Delgado, together with the new General Director of the Carabineros, Ricardo Yáñez, held a meeting this Saturday with their advisers and undersecretaries, in order to establish the first guidelines for the reform of the institution, which is being carried out by the unit. coordinator determined by the ministry.
After the meeting that lasted for about four hours, Delgado stressed that the reform process is being developed together with the officials of the institution, which was represented – in addition to General Yáñez – by a colonel and a senior noncommissioned officer, to give a more territorial and broad look at the subject.

“It was important to involve the Carabineros, because they are going to implement this reform and they can give us the emphasis that interests them to manage these reforms,” said the minister, who stressed that the coordinating unit obtained results quickly.
Among the different proposals that have been turning to the need to reformulate Carabineros is the idea of ”civilizing” the institution -in the sense of giving it a more civil than uniformed approach- and some parliamentarians have even raised the option of including in the new scheme to a civilian “controller” who knows the functioning of the police entity.
“Within the definitions of this coordinating unit is having defined a roadmap, in addition to having specific short-term products, which was requested by the President. These will be systematized in view of what the citizenship asks of us, advancing in this reform “, added Minister Delgado.
After Delgado, the Undersecretary of the Interior Juan Francisco Galli intervened, who emphasized that “today valuable inputs were obtained to obtain objectives in the areas of public security and the legitimacy of the police institution before the citizens, through compliance with protocols and respect for Human Rights “.
The government official said that “we define and discuss, and finally agree on the matters that we must work on: in a public security institution, an adequate police career with training to work on these challenges, and that citizens feel that each peso that is invested in terms of security, it is efficient and effective in the task of providing security.
