Everything started with a letter published in the scientific journal The Lancet, in which the authors, led by Michael Roth, researcher at the University of Basel (Switzerland) point out that there are some studies that link an increased risk of severe Covid-19 symptoms among patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes who consume anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen.
The information was amplified by the French Minister of Health, who through a twitter warned about the danger of using this medicine during the pandemic.
Since then, scientists and doctors have debated the advisability or inconvenience of its intake, a debate that the World Health Organization (WHO) decided in favor of the drug.
The agency published a study in which, after reviewing the current evidence, concludes that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including ibuprofen, do not provide benefits or risks to patients infected with the new coronavirus.
“Nowadays there is no evidence that the use of NSAIDs cause serious adverse events, acute use of medical care, long-term survival or quality of life in patients with Covid-19, ”says the United Nations agency in the document.
Sodium chlorite
The Institute of Public Health (ISP) also warned on Thursday that sodium chlorite not authorized as a medicine and it is not used to treat the coronavirus. According to the institute, this product does not correspond to a drug, and its import, possession, transfer, use, distribution and marketing in Chile is illegal.
As reported by the ISP, The product Sodium Chlorite and Chlorine Dioxide has been detected as being marketed, distributed and advertised as: MMS, miracle solution, MMS German scientific product, miracle mineral solution, on various websites and social media.
About this product, they indicate, “there is no security, quality and efficacy support, so its importation, possession, transfer, use, distribution and commercialization in Chile is illegal ”.
An article by the journalist published in Qué Pasa warned of how in early April a study reviewed the role of vitamin D in the development of Covid-19 disease. The starting point is the evidence that supports the role of this vitamin in respiratory diseases, and that, in the case of the coronavirus, the researchers say, it is reinforced by the fact that the outbreak occurred in winter, when the concentrations are lowest.
The researchers discovered that its deficiency contributes to the appearance of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and many chronic diseases are associated with a lower concentration of vitamin D, both factors present in patients with more severity due to Covid-19.
Vitamin D levels tend to decrease with age, and as case fatality rates for coronavirus increase with increasing age, the study says, it should be a factor to consider in the current pandemic.
In fact, several countries, such as Great Britain for example, are studying supplying this vitamin, as a way to reinforce the population’s defenses against the coronavirus.
