The Minister of Finance, Ignacio Briones, was selected by the British magazine The banker, of the Financial Times group, as “Minister of Finance of the Year of the Americas”, which includes Central, South and North America.

Briones receives recognition, explains the magazine, due to his “Ability to negotiate the economic stimulus measures during the pandemic and the Ministry’s management of sustainable financing ”.

The Banker also recognized the finance ministers of France, Vietnam, Qatar and Morocco.

The publication noted that “at the beginning of March, when the first case of covid-19 was reported in Chile, the country was divided due to the social crisis and dissatisfaction with the political class ”.

“In this context, finding public financing solutions in the midst of the pandemic required much more than the intellectual acumen generally expected of a finance minister. But Minister Ignacio Briones has shown his courage “added the magazine.

The Banker emphasized the “ability of the Secretary of State to secure an emergency package in the middle of the pandemic ”equivalent to US $ 28 billion, including direct transfers for those in need and subsidies for job creation.

This was already highlighted in July by the Financial Times, in an article on Ignacio Briones’ challenges in the framework of covid-19, the social crisis and the economic recession.

According to information published by the Ministry of Finance, the magazine also highlighted the work that has been done by the ministry “in matters of sustainable financing, with the first issuance of green bonds in the Americas in 2019 and the issuance of social bonds in November 2020 ″.

On this recognition, Briones said that it was “A great honor”, but that more than highlighting a person, it is a recognition for the entire team of the portfolio he directs.

“(…) In turn, the recognition carries a tremendous responsibility with all Chilean men and women. We will continue working to recover our economy and our jobs, ”said Briones.

Finally, the publication highlighted the insistence of the Minister of Finance that Chile maintain fiscal prudence.

“A greater emphasis on addressing inequality can only improve the country’s chances for a brighter and more sustainable future,” concluded The Banker.
