The Minister of Justice and Public Security of BrazilSergio Moro, emblem of the fight against corruption, announced this Friday his resignation, after reporting attempts at “political interference” in judicial matters by the president Jair Bolsonaro.

The drop that made the glass overflow was the dismissal of the director general of the Federal Police (PF), Maurício Valeixo, published during the morning by the Official Gazette.

“I have no way to keep the commitments I made, without working conditions, without having how to preserve the autonomy of the PF” or “forced to agree to political interference in the PF,” Moro explained in a statement to the press in Brasilia.

Valeixo was one of Moro’s main collaborators from the time the current minister was in charge, as judge of first instance, of the Lava Jato operation, the largest anti-corruption investigation in the history of Brazil. Bolsonaro had already tried to replace him last August.

According to sources quoted by the press, Bolsonaro intends to appoint an official over the PF over whom he can exercise some influence, at a time when some investigations are approaching his family circle.

“The president told me that he wanted to place (in the PF) a person with whom he had personal contact, to whom I could call, request information, intelligence reports (…) Providing this type of information is not the role of the Federal Police, ”Moro limited himself to explaining.

The political crisis brought down Brazil’s markets. The Sao Paulo Stock Exchange sank more than 9% and the real fell to record lows against the dollar.

Moro is the key second minister to leave the government in recent weeks. The head of Health, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, fell after insisting on the need to maintain quarantine measures to face the pandemic of the new coronavirus, contrary to Bolsonaro’s opinion.
