The government of Brazil reported that one of the three victims of the attack with a knife perpetrated this Thursday in a church in the heart of Nice, in the southeast of France, she was a woman of Brazilian nationality.
In his weekly Facebook connection, the President Jair Bolsonaro called the attack an act of “Cristofobia” and affirmed that such a fact “has to be fought, it does not have to be [respondido] with little flowers ”.
“She was there praying, that guy who hates Christians came in, we talked about cristofobia, and he stabbed that lady in there. We regret the death of the three people, ”said the president, who identified the woman as Simone Barreto Silva.
The Foreign Ministry announced in a statement “that one of the fatal victims was a 44-year-old Brazilian, a mother of three, residing in France.”
Consulted by the Agence France-Presse (AFP), the ministry did not confirm whether the deceased woman also had French nationality.
The victim was seriously injured in the attack on the Notre-Dame basilica, committed by a 21-year-old Tunisian migrant recently arrived in France.
The woman managed to flee to a neighboring bar, but died shortly after, police sources told AFP.
“Tell my children that I love them,” he managed to say before he died, according to testimonies released by the BFMTV network.
The other two victims were killed inside the basilica: an elderly woman who was beheaded by the attacker who tried to behead her, and the basilica’s sacristan, a 45-year-old layman, married and father of two girls.
The Brazilian government also expressed “its firm repudiation of any form of terrorism” and expressed “especially its solidarity with Christians and people of other faiths who suffer persecution and violence for their beliefs.”
