The Central Bank reported this Thursday Monthly Index of Economic Activity (Imacec) corresponding to August, the month in which the fall was somewhat sharper than in the previous month.
According to preliminary information, the Imacec for August fell 11.3% compared to the same month of the previous year.
In July the economy in Chile fell 10.7%. In June the indicator had already shown a “relief” by falling 12.4% then during April and May it registered 14.1% and 15.3% crashes, respectively.
With respect to August, the issuing institute indicated that the Imacec minero decreased 3.4%, Meanwhile he non-miner did it at 12.2%.
The result of the month -as in previous months- was impacted “by the effects of the health emergency ”.
In this context, the activities most affected were the services and construction; and to a lesser extent the manufacturing industry.
“In services, the falls in education, transportation, business services, and restaurants and hotels. Trade growth partially offset this result, ”added the BC.
In seasonally adjusted terms, and with respect to the previous month, the mining Imacec fell 1.9% and the non-mining sector grew 3.4%.
As from April onwards, after the spread of the covid-19 pandemic in the country, the BC noted that the crisis has imposed challenges in the collection of basic data, which has implied “additional efforts with information providers to minimize the impact on the quality of the statistics ”.
However, he recalled that the figures provided could be subject to further review than those historically recorded.
