Carabineros estimated at 25,000 people who came this Sunday, October 18 to the Plaza Baquedano, in the heart of Santiago, to commemorate the first anniversary of the beginning of the wave of protests against the Government and inequality: the so-called “social outbreak.”

From early in the morning hundreds of people approached this nerve center of the capital and after 5:00 p.m. there were already several surrounding streets that were overflowing.

In a festive atmosphere, unlike in previous weeks, social groups, young people and entire families, with children and the elderly included, brandished flags and banners.

The massive concentration was mostly peacefulBut there were some confrontations between protesters and police in the surroundings of the square and a fight between barristas from the University of Chile and Colo Colo.

The burning of two nearby Catholic churches were also recorded.

At one point in the Palacio de La Moneda, the Minister of the Interior, Victor Perez, acknowledged tonight that “today there have been demonstrations and those who did them peacefully were able to do so without any difficulty, protected by the Carabineros, from the morning.”

“Unfortunately minority groups carried out acts of violence inside the demonstration, when the brave bars clashed violently and the whole country saw them, and then minority groups sought to carry out vandalism against public and private property, “said the Secretary of State.
