Ten very violent events, one for each day in September, according to data confirmed by the Bio Bío Intendancy, shake, literally speaking, the south of the province of Arauco.
More specifically, only in the last week, since last Wednesday, there have been eight episodes related to the officially called “rural violence” in the province of Arauco.
What could be summarized as the beginning of a “Black September”, in which the last week translates into the most violent of 2020 in Arauco, with eight arson attacks on cabins, machinery and vehicles, in addition to the murder of Moses Villarroel, from a shotgun, in Cañete.
Two friends who accompanied him tell that the hooded men they met by chance argued after the crime: “Why did you shoot him asshole, he was with his hands up”.
A journalistic summary of BioBioChile shows the violence unleashed in recent days, “That worries” to the mayor Sergio Giacaman.
Escalation of violence
The first violent event of the month of the National Holidays in Arauco occurred on Tuesday night.
Three police officers were attacked with firearms in Tirúa, in the extreme south of the province and bordering Malleco, in La Araucanía, when officials from the Quidico checkpoint were moving to kilometer 78 of the road heading south to the town.
They encountered a barricade of downed trees on the road. Braking and being attacked was simultaneous. They had been ambushed by armed men who were shooting at them, but could not see them. It was evident that they did see them.
The carabinieri repelled the attack, with “fire at will” and the group escaped in an unknown direction. As is often the case, strange as it may seem, there were no injuries, “or casualties” in the shooting.
Another attack, this time arson, occurred the next day, in Contulmo.
It was registered in the morning of Wednesday, September 2, inside a property of Forestal Mininco in the town of San Ernesto, north of the commune where Lake Lanalhue is located.
Again, a group came to the property and set fire 5 forest machines and they stole a truck, before escaping.
The next arson attack occurred in the afternoon and destroyed two houses in the town of Quidico, Tirúa. Neighborhood houses, with people inside. No summer huts for tourists.
A new murder
Two arson attacks were registered this Sunday night in the Cañete commune in the Arauco province, Bío Bío region. They destroyed a house, a warehouse and a summer cabin.
The first of the attacks took place at 10:45 p.m., where the unknown persons used incendiary devices to burn a house and a warehouse on Route P60, at kilometer 30.
The two buildings were completely destroyed and the presence of residents was ruled out.
As reported by the Carabineros, pamphlets referring to Mapuche political issues were found at the site.
The other attack corresponds to a summer cabin, around 11:30 p.m., where those responsible set fire to the house on Route P72S, at kilometer 3.
There were no residents in the place and pamphlets were also found. One of them pointed out, according to the Carabineros, “Freedom to the PPM on hunger strike”.
That same night of terror culminated with a 21-year-old Cañetino assassinated shot after the arson attack.
According to the police, the same individuals who set fire to the houses, escaped in two vehicles, in their flight they found another mobile in the area of the Cañete Suspension Bridge, with three occupants inside.
According to the story of one of them, they drank beers and for no reason the attackers shot Moisés Orellana in the head, who despite arriving alive at the Cañete Hospital, “I had a wound incompatible with life”.
After this fatal episode, the murderers abandoned the two vehicles they had stolen and burned them.

Attacks do not stop
Despite complaints and statements from various national authorities, including President Sebastián Piñera, the episodes of violence do not stop in Arauco. This Wednesday, again, two more events were reported.
A new arson attack was recorded Contulmo, shortly before 00:00 hours on Tuesday.
Carabineros reached the height of kilometer 41 of Route P-60R, for information about three cabins that were burning. Once in the place, they realized that one was completely destroyed, one with partial damage and a third only with damage to a door and windows.
After the disaster in the cabins, there was a new arson attack, again in Cañete.
In the lower Butamalal sector of Cayucupil, unknown persons burned five trucks and a crane.
According to Radio Bío Bío, there were seven hooded men who threatened the drivers and proceeded to burn the machines.
Concern
In conversation with BioBioChile, Mayor Sergio Giacaman expressed his concern about the escalation of violence in Arauco.
“There are four dead, Moisés Villarroel is the fourth assassinated since last year. For some of these reasons, there are people with precautionary measures and who are part of what they called themselves Mapuche political prisoners. Deep down, violence for what? So that they can have a different treatment from the State, no. Any Chilean who commits a crime will be treated the same because justice is the same for everyone, ”said Giacaman.
“It is worrying, the death of Moisés must mark a before and after and add the other deaths we have had. The processes determined by the Prosecutor’s Office have achieved precautionary measures, in which there is a world that wants to change it with pressure measures ”, adds the regional chief.
According to data from the Regional Government, since Sebastián Piñera took office 163 complaints have been filed. Only this year, which is barely in its ninth month, have 86 legal actions of this type, that is, it exceeds the 77 presented by the Government of Chile Vamos between 2018 and 2019.
An increase has been seen in the last three to four months: January 7 episodes, February 2, March 9, April 9, May 6, June 16, July 14, August 15 and September 10 (in 10 days).
“Investigations are progressing”, according to Mayor Giacaman. Phrase repeated by him, but also by his predecessors.
