Carabineros denounced this Sunday afternoon an attack and fire that destroyed the Parroquia de la Asunción, located at the intersection of Barón Pierre de Coubertin with Vicuña Mackenna, on the border between Santiago and Providencia.
The temple, located a few blocks south of Plaza Baquedano, was attacked by vandals who set fire to its door amid incidents in the sector as part of the first anniversary of the social outbreak.
Several fire companies came to the scene to combat the flames, which around 8:00 p.m. caused the collapse of the church spire.
At least 14 units of the institution worked in the sector.
The incident was controlled, reported Firefighters, around 9:00 p.m.
“We live in a quite complex situation due to the fire and the large amount of smoke. The initial dispatch was complicated due to the situation that was happening at that time“, He said Commander Gabriel Huerta, of the Fire Department of Santiago.

The Parish of the Assumption was the second Catholic church attacked this Sunday in the capital after the irruption of hooded men in the church of Carabineros San Francisco de Borja.
“Violence is bad, and whoever sows violence reaps destruction, pain and death. Let us never justify any violence”, said the Archbishop of Santiago, Celestino Aós, commenting on the acts of violence this Sunday.
The Minister of the Interior, Victor Perez, said this Sunday at a press conference from La Moneda that “burning churches is an expression of brutality.”
“Indignation and sadness for the fire and destruction of the parish of La Asunción, and the attack on the San Francisco de Borja church, both heritage buildings, “said the Minister of Cultures, Arts and Heritage on her Twitter account, Consuelo Valdés.
