This Friday, the prosecutor Emiliano Arias referred to the closure of the investigation of the Asipes case, a cause he did not leave responsible, since more than 50 defendants were acquitted.

According to the first prosecutor to take the case, the decision of the national prosecutor Jorge Abbott, who separated Asipes from the mother case, the Corpesca case, affected the fate of the investigation.

“The new national prosecutor (referring to Abbott) decided to separate everything that was being investigated together and in that way the procedural fate of the case was sealed,” he said in an interview with The clinic.

“Once Corpesca was assigned to me, and after a first analysis that we did together with the police, we were able to verify the same contribution mechanism in some fisheries in the south, Asipes and others in the southern zone -Fipes-, consistent with the same type of Corpesca mechanism ”, he added.

“Faced with indications of the commission of crimes associated with the illegal financing of politics, I opened these investigations in order to investigate with the same team from the Public Ministry and the police, the same phenomenon, which was the illegal financing of politics by some organizations of the fishing industry. But the time and the way of investigating and understanding the investigation changed by changing the national prosecutor, “he added.

After Arias, the Asipes case passed to Julio Contardo -who went from the Bío Bío Prosecutor’s Office to Maule and now Marcela Cartagena, who referred the case to the Anticorruption prosecutor, María José Aguayo, the proceedings starting in 2018.
