The Argentine government will open the borders to receive tourists from neighboring countries during the next southern summer season, in order to improve a sector hit by the coronavirus pandemic, the minister of the area, Matías Lammens, reported this Saturday.
“The national government made the decision to open the borders to receive tourists from neighboring countriess. In principle it will be by air, through the Ezeiza airport and by sea through the port of Buenos Aires ”, declared the Minister of Tourism, Matías Lammens to radio Miter.
He affirmed that “the conditions are in place for tourists can come to Argentina, in this new stage where we have to live with the virus ”.
The authorities did not specify the date of the reopening of borders to tourists, but normally the summer season starts mid december.
“The decision implies an important income for our economy and one more stage in this pandemic to turn the page, without abandoning the fight against the virus that has us in full battle ”, added the minister.
In normal times, tourism represents 10% of the Gross Domestic Product of Argentina, which has been in recession since 2018 and with the economy hit by the pandemic.
Tourists from Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay should not comply with a quarantine when entering Argentina, for which “they will be asked for a PCR test to have a degree of security, they will also take the fever and there will be an affidavit,” said Lammens.
Argentina maintains the borders closed from March 20 when he went into confinement. The restrictions are still in force although very moderate in Buenos Aires and its periphery, where a third of the 44 million Argentines live.
The metropolitan area of Buenos Aires concentrated for more than four months 90% of cases but in recent weeks their daily participation in infections, which spread through the provinces, has been reduced to 25%.
Last week the regular internal flights although restrictions and reduced frequency remain, after seven months suspended.
The province of Buenos Aires authorized schedule the opening of spas from the Argentine Atlantic coast, which live on domestic tourism, with strict protocols.
“We are going to have summer season and for that we have to take good care of ourselves. We are working with each of the provinces to implement a very strong plan of the National State, to avoid contagion and saturation of the health system, ”said Lammens.
With 11,968 infections and 275 new deaths registered this Saturday, the country accumulates 1,081,323 cases, of which 881,113 recovered and 28,613 died.
