There were 54 deputies voted against to legislate the project that seeks to establish the right to voluntarily opt for medical assistance in order to accelerate death in the event of a terminal and incurable disease, better known as euthanasia.

But the 79 supports it obtained allowed the idea of legislating in the Lower House to be approved, that is, for the initiative to be debated and to begin its processing.

The proposal on “dignified death and palliative care” proposes to introduce modifications in the Law on Rights and Duties of People in Health Care and in the Civil and Penal codes, so that people, fulfilling certain conditions strictly described, request medical assistance to die; and it also ensures that those who are in a terminal state or with severe non-cancer pain have the right to receive palliative care aimed at reducing it.

However, among those who reject euthanasia -the majority of the right-wing deputies and some Christian Democrats- there are those who point out that the “preservation of life” should be above all else, and accuse that a project like this does not take care of it , as the Evangelical MP Francesca Muñoz (Registered nurse) during the debate.

“The State is the one that should focus its efforts on providing people who suffer from this type of disease, with those treatments aimed at reducing the pain of their disease and improving their quality of life.. However, this project does not focus on the preservation of life, but on the easy alternative, represented by euthanasia, “he accused.

In turn, the DC Jorge Sabag, who also voted against, argued that “in the case of death, we are all jointly responsible for the lives of others, and that is why we are in this Congress to pass laws to improve the lives of others.”

But he rejected the project because “i believe in life and that with palliative care we can help you live the last moments of your life. “

“SICK AND FAMILIES LIVE A LIFE OF SHIT”

A parliamentarian from Chile Vamos who voted in favor of the initiative is Sebastian Keitelby Evópoli. In his turn, he argued that “palliative care is very important, but there are also diseases in which this palliative care is not enough, and really these kinds of diseases make sick people and families live shitty lives. “

Meanwhile, the independent Pepe Auth (former PPD) recalled a harsh family episode when announcing his support for euthanasia.

“I could not respond to the request of my father, who died last year, irreversibly affected by bone cancer, which had him prostrate for several months suffering to the unspeakable. My father was a doctor with a strong personality, sure of himself, but he lived humiliated by his situation of absolute dependence for his most basic needs. I do not want this congress to replace people in that very personal decision, “he said.

“TRIUMPH OF THE LAY STATE AND FREEDOMS”

He Liberal MP Vlado Mirosevic, one of the promoters, pointed out that “when we presented this project, together with the deputy Maya Fernández, Chile was the most conservative country in Latin America, but Chile changed, and this project that seemed impossible; today it will begin to consecrate the most basic freedoms. “

“Today is a triumph of the secular state, of freedoms”, he emphasized.

The deputy Fernández (PS), in turn, celebrated that “it is an achievement to be able to advance on a bill that we saw that in the past all doors were closed in Congress, today we can debate it.”

“Beyond our differences, We do not have to think about ourselves, but about all those who are suffering from a terminal illness“he urged.

INDICATIONS AND PRECISION ON PSYCHIC PAIN

The project must now be analyzed in the Health Commission, and then return to Room for voting in particular. The latter is expected to occur in January, eventually to be dispatched to the Senate before the February legislative recess.

“I think it will be very fast, expeditious, and I hope that in January the bill will be approved from this House to the Senate “, anticipated the deputy Ricardo Celis (PPD), president of said parliamentary instance.

The Commission will also analyze indications, some regarding the articles on the psychic pain, one of the grounds for requesting euthanasia, a point that some believe is not well defined in the text.

Others seek to reinforce Palliative care, but the head of the RN bench, Sebastian Torrealba, prefers to address it in a separate proposal that sleeps in Congress.

“You have to do a emergency call to Government to immediately discuss the palliative care project. This initiative that we presented from the National Renovation almost two years ago is also a priority with respect to this euthanasia project, “he urged.
