Another turn of the Broad Front: Now they open to primaries and demand three minimum conditions

“I do not rule out that conditions change, watch out, there are two days left to close the talks.” With those words, this morning at 24 H, the president of the Democratic Revolution meant, Catalina Perez, to the decision of the Broad Front to close the door to the primaries in the municipal elections and of regional governors with the entire center-left and that this Sunday they had communicated from the bloc.

“We discard the proposal for a single national pact of primaries that ignores our differences with the conservative and neoliberal sectors of the country, as has been reaffirmed in recent days, in sectors of the former New Majority”, they had maintained yesterday in an official communiqué of the block.

However, Pérez’s statements today were not random. During yesterday afternoon, among the helmsmen of the conglomerate began to analyze some exits and responses to the harsh criticism that had arisen from the rest of the center-left -and even within its ranks- and They defined opening the door to reach an agreement in the last 3 days of deadline to register the primaries of those elections, but with certain minimums.

The issue was raised again during the meeting of the bloc’s national table this morning. At that appointment, the helmsmen, together with the electoral managers of the conglomerate, they acknowledged that the way the decision was communicated had been a “mistake”, a situation that, according to them, had made the FA “pay costs”. In this sense, according to the same sources, the Frente Amplio agreed on an “opening”, but they assessed that they should “make explicit” under what conditions.

Thus, during the encounter, lThe leaders were able to outline what were the three minimums that they will demand from the former New Majority and the Unit for Change to close the negotiation, text that was being written up to the closing of this edition. According to them, these points had already been previously communicated to the rest of the communities during the talks, a situation that, however, is denied by some of those familiar with the negotiations.

“We have two days to achieve primaries with programmatic minimums, with the parties’ willingness to bring all mayors currently in office to democratic competition and exclude any candidate linked to corruption. We hope that there is a willingness to change the current conditions and that we reach an agreement that allows us to continue moving forward, ”said deputy Pérez to La Tercera PM.

In that sense, the option of reaching an agreement for primaries happens, as explained by the bloc, in the first place, because there are “Ethical minimums in elementary school”. That is, a commitment not to present or support any candidate who was involved in any type of case or complaint of corruption.

Likewise, they defined that they will insist on the creation of “Programmatic minima”, so that they have a pact “with content” and unity is not “just to beat the right.”

As a last point, the Frente Amplio decided to request that the practice of “the one who has maintains” be abandoned and that all parties put all their incumbent mayors in competition. On this, they say in the FA, the only community that had already openly declared its disposition was the Christian Democrats.

“We are still in time to manage to articulate primaries and agree on a commitment to transforming ideas that allows us to offer Chile an alternative to the last 30 years of neoliberalism. If it cannot be done, the FA will hold its primaries to democratically define mayors and regional governors who will be the candidate, “said the president of Comunes. Jorge Ramírez.

And he added: “It is essential that the rest of the forces are available so that all incumbents participate in the primaries and that no incumbent mayor who has corruption cases can participate in them.”

Along the same lines, his pair of Social Convergence, Alondra Arellano, stated that “there is time to seek an agreement in the next elections, but first we must ensure these conditions and programmatic minimums that guarantee to improve the living conditions of all and all.” And, summoning his peers from the former NM, he added: “as FA we have always been willing to seek agreements and mechanisms that generate majorities, but they must be transformative. Is the entire ex NM willing to do this or just a part? “

Despite this openness, the bloc recognizes that there is little time left to resume talks and reach an agreement with their peers from the former New Majority. In that sense, within the center-left they see more chances of reaching primaries in terms of regional governors than in the case of mayors.

From the former NM, meanwhile, this morning some leaders such as the helmsmen of the DC, Fuad Chahin and the PS, Álvaro Elizalde, called on their FA peers to “reconsider.” Also, from that sector they assured that they were waiting for a possible turn by the FA to continue analyzing the scenario.

Meanwhile, the questions yesterday continued to add up. To the public disagreement on the determination that RD deputies had already expressed as Natalia Castillo the Pablo Vidal, today others joined. For example, the liberal deputy, Alejandro Bernales He maintained that “I do not share the decision my party made yesterday. Liberals have always been for the unity of the opposition and we have been expressing this for months. For this reason I have asked the board of my party to urgently convene a General Council ”.

Meanwhile, the deputy of Unir, Marcelo Diaz, argued that “the mere idea of defeating the right is not enough, we have to be very clear about what we are going to do, what are the commitments that we assume with the citizens (…) if these elements are obviously that one has to be available for the primaries. But it strikes me that I hear only one interpellation of electoral pacts and no content in the debate ”.

Others like the ideologue of the Broad Front, Carlos Ruiz, he insisted on the point and in conversation with Cooperativa he pointed out that “the Broad Front cannot be pressured with a unit without content.”

In turn, the deputy of Social Convergence Gabriel boricHe expressed his opinion through his Twitter account, pointing out that the “primaries should be about shared ideas and proposals, if not it is only power for meaningless power. Let’s work hard to have presidential primaries for the entire opposition with common content publicly agreed upon in open discussions. “
