Hundreds of doctors signed a letter rejecting an insert published in a national newspaper, where 250 doctors and interns had asked to repeal Law 21,030, which regulates the decriminalization of voluntary interruption of pregnancy in three causes.
“The right of women over their bodies does not extend to dispose of the life of the one in gestation in its womb. Public policies should encourage mothers to carry their pregnancy to term in the best possible way, ”says the controversial publication among other things.
Specifically, the self-described “Doctors for Life” requested with the insertion of November 1 in The Mercury, that the new constitution criminalizes abortion, as was the case before the law promulgated in 2017.
The answer
Faced with this situation, 886 “Doctors for the sexual and reproductive rights of women” they decided to sign an open letter, where they reject the intentions made known by their more conservative colleagues.
For the hundreds of signers, the purpose of the insert is “Make the country go back in the great advance that was achieved for women who experience these grave circumstances: life-threatening, life-incompatible fetal malformation or pregnancy due to rape and who choose to terminate their pregnancy ”, says the answer.
“Its application to the rights of the unborn, over and above the serious health circumstances experienced by their mothers it has already been resolved by parliament and the Constitutional Court in favor of those mothers ”, adds the text.
Along these lines, and in the face of the discussion that could be presented about free abortion in our country, sexual rights doctors invite their colleagues to collaborate so that fewer and fewer women need to terminate their pregnancy.
“(…) Working to improve sex education and access to contraceptive methods for all women living in our country. Reducing the gap in unresolved contraception needs is the only public health policy which has proven to decrease abortion rates nationwide. Restrictive laws like the ones we have in Chile do not reduce abortions. It only makes them insecure ”, they emphasize.
The statement in response to the published insert is driven by the Gynecologists Association of Chile and 886 doctors from all specialties and regions of the country join.
