The Foreign Minister, Andrés Allamand, reiterated the Government’s negative position to sign the Escazú Agreement, stating that “It is inconvenient for Chile”.
The treaty considers principles such as environmental information, the participation of all those involved in decision-making, and the protection of environmental defenders. The pact will go into effect on September 26, so our country has few days to make a final decision.
According to La Tercera, the Secretary of State participated during this day in a session of the Senate Foreign Relations Commission to present Chile’s position.
In that instance, the minister maintained that the position “has not changed. The agreement, in the opinion of the Government and as it is proposed, is inconvenient for Chile. That is the reason why so far it has not subscribed ”, adding that they are analyzing four relevant points of this initiative.
These correspond to analyzing the content of the changes that it will bring in the environmental legislation of our country; the interpretative scope of certain principles of the pact; evaluate what obligations Chile would commit to if it signs; and analyze the possibility of it being taken to international tribunals, in an eventual case.
Finally, Allamand indicated that Chile’s position vis-à-vis Escazú “must require a better understanding of all sectors that have an interest in the matter”, emphasizing the opposite position and that, therefore, “There should be no room for the generation of a false expectation.”
For their part, different opposition parties issued a statement calling on the Government to sign the agreement before the deadline and indicated that the pact “is a response to the situation faced by the population of the slaughter areas. The long struggle of the Puchuncaví-Quintero organizations would be different if they could have all the information in a transparent way.
They also state that it is “The last chance this government has to demonstrate its commitment in defense of the rights to participation of citizens and international leadership in the climate and ecological crisis ”.
