The Senate Human Rights Commission approved this Monday the indication of Senator Adriana Muñoz (PPD) that prohibits, at all events, “conversion therapies” of sexual orientations or gender identities, within the framework of the amendments to the Law 20.609, which establishes measures against discrimination and is known as “Zamudio Law”.

The foregoing after in the debate on the project, on September 14, the Undersecretary of Human Rights, Lorena Recabarren, will request a change in the wording of the text that vetoes this type of procedure, noting that the prohibition “It could even be applied to cases in which the consent of the person could exist.”

“The State of Chile has always indicated that it is opposed to conversion therapies. But the form that is written (the indication) is in absolute terms, that is, it could be applied to cases where the consent of a person could be counted on. it would like to be treated, and there we are in a problem, “said the undersecretary in the session a week ago.

Recabarren’s sayings generated a wave of criticism from organizations that group sexual minorities in the country such as the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation (Movilh) -which described as “abominable and totally contrary to human dignity” the exposition of the official- Equals Foundation – which indicated that “corrective” therapies amount to acts of torture and are one of the most egregious ways of materializing hatred and discrimination against LGBTIQ + communities “-.

One week from the controversy, the government official participated this Monday afternoon in the session of the Senate Human Rights Commission who approved the indication and assured that his words were people with hearing disabilities.

“I want to deeply regret that my intervention has generated a misunderstanding. I especially regret it because that interpretation that was given to my words caused some people to feel offended and hurt, “Recabarren told the senators.

Added that “The interpretation that was given to my words is not consistent with my convictions, with my thoughts, with my intentions, nor with the convictions that this Government has.”

“I reiterate that the Government opposes, without nuances, any practice that threatens the dignity of the people, either because of their identity, their gender expression or their sexual orientation, “concluded the official’s intervention.

The Equals Foundation, through a statement on Twitter, celebrated the approval of the indication that prohibits “the misnamed conversion therapies”, stating that “there is nothing to correct”.
