Around 8:00 p.m. this Sunday, a group of people arrived at the Coquimbo Market and attacked its premises, causing damage and removing merchandise from the place.

According to the first information, it would be a group of about fifty people, between Chileans and foreign citizens, and at the moment the motive for the attack is unknown. However, eight hours before the tenants of the place had published a video warning that criminals planned to attack the place by order of the owners of the premises, to generate damage.

Witnesses affirmed that the action was carried out in a violent manner and assured that the protesters attacked the tenants with stones and sticks, who also arrived at the place to protect their commercial premises.

Carabineros Special Forces personnel and Army personnel arrived at the site and a peaceful eviction from the compound was carried out, however, Carabineros fired tear gas at the place where the tenants were, according to a live broadcast of Region4CL.

The Governor of Coquimbo, Gonzalo Chacón, also arrived at the place and assured that the necessary measures will be taken against the persons responsible for this take, and that the situation will be taken to court.

He also explained a particular situation that drew the attention of those present, since two trucks belonging to the perpetrators of the taking left the place with merchandise and left without a police escort. According to the Governor’s version, these vehicles would later be taken to the police station.

Currently the Market is in a dispute between its owners, a company that plans to build a building on the site, and the tenants, who through the Municipality have requested that it be declared heritage of the city.
