The slowness in the investigation of the murder of the young Romario VelozAt the hands of a military man during a protest in La Serena in October 2019, he took his mother, Mary Cortez, to do a “performance” and undress in front of the Government headquarters to demand “justice.”

“Justice for Romario”
With her chest exposed and the message of “Justice for Romario” written on her skin, the mother paraded through the streets of the capital, escorted by several members of human rights and Afro-descendant organizations. Minutes later, and perched on the fence of the Palacio de La Moneda, headquarters of the Executive, she directly rebuked the president and demanded that the cause of her son be investigated, for which there is still no accused agent.
Romario Veloz, a 26-year-old Ecuadorian student, was assassinated by a military man on October 20, three days after the current social crisis in Chile began, during a demonstration in front of the La Serena bus terminal.
This is one of the more than thirty deaths during the demonstrations since October 18, 2019, when the crisis broke out, considered the most serious since the return to democracy in 1990.
“Since he was black, he was an easy target”
Cortez learned of his son’s death through social networks, “They have killed a black man in the protests,” read a message on Twitter. They never called her from the hospital to which the young man’s body was transferred and when she found him they didn’t let her see him either, the mother denounces.
“The one who killed my son did so with intent, as he was black, he was an easy target,” lamented Cortez and explained that the consequences of “institutional racism” are added to his son’s case, which have further complicated the investigation. “I thought that with his death the story ended, but that’s when my ordeal just began”, added.
A year without legal progress
Almost twelve months after the murder, the deceased’s mother denounces the bureaucratic obstacles she had to face after the loss of her son and the slowness of the judicial processes to try to find, without any fruit, the murderer. “Ya year has passed and I still have nothing to say to my son: ‘We have managed to find your murderer,’ ”the woman cried.
