In the midst of the crisis that the DR is going through and that had a correlation in the results of the regional governors’ primaries this Sunday, in the last hours it emerged that the deputies of the Democratic Revolution Pablo Vidal and Natalia Castillo resigned from the community.
This was confirmed by different party sources The Third PM. The leaders would have made effective their disaffiliation before the Electoral Service a few weeks ago in the midst of the differences that they have publicly expressed regarding the leadership of the party led by Catalina Pérez, which worsened after the results of the last elections.
In fact, Vidal eToday he sent a letter to the party membership in which he explained his reasons for leaving the community. “Through this letter I inform you that, after a long and hard process of personal reflection, a few weeks ago I made the decision to resign from the Democratic Revolution, which I communicated in a timely manner to the president of the party,” he wrote.
And I add: “Today, it seems that the Democratic Revolution renounced the audacity and conviction to lead. I would like to believe that things can be different. I would like the RD to be determined to lead a transformative process of the center-left, along with social democratic, socialist, progressive, liberal, green and feminist visions, but the signs that the RD has preferred a path where a left pole is consolidated are varied and consistent classical, in a way where I believe that an identity of challenge and testimony is privileged, dancing to the beats of a music alien to those that inspired us in the beginning ”.
“As you know, I was from the beginning of the DR together with many and many, helping to build a place of hope, a space to believe and create a possible future. The memories and principles with which we founded this project are the most valuable of my political life, and they are the north that guides all my decisions. I assure you that resigning is the most painful and bitter political decision of my life ”.
Why did I make this decision? Unfortunately, the Democratic Revolution is on a path that I cannot travel. The Democratic Revolution was born to lead the renewal of a center-left worn out and eaten away by the comfort of power. We made a promise to the country and together with the leadership of Beatriz Sánchez, we offered a project to lead, govern and transform Chile ”.
The legislator stressed that “I will never renounce the principles with which I entered the military: to do politics, as President Allende said, ‘with faith in Chile and its destiny’; maintain a sense of urgency; renew the project of a pluralist center-left, work for a new development model, do politics from the facts and not with testimonies, be consistent with personal convictions and uphold the ethics of fulfilling what was promised (…). History is not going to stop and wait for us to mature, we have an urgent duty to comply with the Chilean men and women today, and to offer again – whatever it costs – a project of unity and transformation from the Chilean center-left.
With the decision of both parliamentarians, the RD bench was reduced from 7 to 5 members and the Broad Front, in total, from 17 to 15 deputies. Initially, the party had come to Congress with eight parliamentarians, although at the beginning of 2019 Renato Garín decided to resign from the party. For its part, the coalition does not have the same members as in 2018, after the PH (Pamela Jiles, Florcita Alarcón and Tomás Hirsch) and the environmentalists (Félix González) left the bloc and, this year, the former socialists Marcelo Díaz and Patricio Rozas.
Both legislators were critical of the way in which the directive had led the failed negotiations to reach an agreement of municipal primaries and regional governors of the entire center-left, which ended in the sector divided into two pacts. At that time, the legislators questioned the erratic position that the bloc had regarding the possibility of joining an agreement with the former New Majority.
“It was not for this that I entered the Democratic Revolution,” said Vidal on that occasion, who was part of the founding groups of the Frente Amplio store. While Castillo described the block’s decision as “a mistake”. “I respect the decision of the FA’s national table, but a profound mistake is being made, the responsibility to the country is much greater than any identity projection.”
Vidal had been marking internal differences with the current leadership for a long time and stating that the RD and the Broad Front should seek alliances with their peers from the former New Majority. His close friends assure that his diagnosis is that his party ended up falling into irrelevance, after giving in to sectors of the bloc that have stressed a thesis of outlining and left-winging.
In this context, the legislator had been thinking for months about the possibility of leaving the DR. Close to the parliamentarian, they have conveyed that his natural closeness is with the Socialist Party, although for now he would remain independent within the Broad Front.
After knowing the decision, doubts arose as to whether or not the legislator will be able to make the leap to the Senate as he had planned before leaving the community. According to RD sources, the parliamentarian would have resigned before November 21, so he would not be prevented by anti-drug law and could compete in the quota of a party.
However, from the community they transmitted that the president of the party would give statements during the day. And Vidal and Castillo, meanwhile, were expected to hold a press point in Congress at 4:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the conglomerate is facing more problems, according to sources from the Liberal Party, they will define their continuity in the Broad Front tomorrow afternoon.
