A ship carrying 43 crew members and about 6,000 cows sank after issuing a distress call in the middle of a typhoon off the western shores of Japan, reported the only survivor rescued so far by the Japanese coast guard.
Gulf Livestock 1 issued a call for help early Wednesday when it was at 185 km from the Japanese island Amami Oshima, in southwestern Japan.
Late on Wednesday, lCoast Guard lifeguards found a survivor, a 45-year-old Filipino chief of officers, who said he had put on a life jacket and jumped into the water after calling his colleagues on board.
According to the sole survivor so far, the ship’s engine stopped and a wave overturned it, Before sinking, the coastal hideout announced in a statement, which does not provide further details on the time of the sinking.
The survivor said that he had not seen other crewmates while waiting to be rescued.
An inflatable boat was sighted in the area, but the Coast Guard did not confirm it had any relation to the sunken ship.
Three coast guard vessels, five aircraft and divers work on the rescue operation.
On the ship they traveled 39 Filipinos, two New Zealanders and two Australiansas well as 5,800 cows and their destination was a port in China.
